Context for 509 Snowmobile Gear Review
This winter, I had the opportunity to put a complete 509 kit to the test, consisting of the R-200 Crossover insulated jacket, Powerline insulated bib pants, the FZN LVL 1 Party Suit, Free Range gloves, and Saber Single BOA boots. I conducted my testing in Gaspésie, both on trail and off trail, across a wide range of conditions. I rode through intense snowstorms where every movement matters, as well as during milder late-season days with temperatures around 5 °C. At the heart of winter, temperatures dropped below –20 °C, allowing me to assess the gear’s performance in biting cold as well as in warmer conditions.
Motivated to see how far this collection could go, I approached every ride with the same goal: push the limits of the equipment and determine whether the 509 ensemble truly lived up to its reputation.
First Impressions of the 509 R-200 and Powerline Gear
Right out of the box, the 509 ensemble inspires confidence. Assembly quality, material robustness, and overall finish are impeccable.
The insulated R-200 Crossover jacket immediately feels like a serious piece of gear. Its tough outer fabric, slightly stiff at first, is clearly designed to handle the harshest conditions. It feels ready for anything, from dry summit winds to heavy spring snow.

The assembly quality, material robustness, and finish are impeccable.
The insulated Powerline bib pants strike an excellent balance. The well-insulated front effectively blocks the wind, while the more flexible rear section provides natural freedom of movement. Its slightly lower cut at the back promotes mobility on the snowmobile and eliminates any pulling sensation when leaning into deep snow.
The Free Range gloves won me over as soon as I put them on. The high-quality leather, solid stitching, and precise fit inspire real confidence.
The Saber Single BOA boots also stand out with their firm support and rugged construction. The BOA lacing system allows for quick and precise adjustment, ideal for switching between walking and riding.

The BOA lacing system provides quick and precise adjustment, perfect for switching between walking and riding.
Finally, the FZN LVL 1 Party Suit integrates seamlessly into the setup. This comfortable, well-fitted base layer breathes well, despite a slightly short front zipper that makes getting into it a bit more difficult.
Real-World Testing of the 509 Gear
I spread my testing of the 509 gear over several weeks, encountering conditions ranging from –20 °C snowstorms to spring rides at 5 °C. An ideal scenario to judge the versatility of the equipment.
Insulated Powerline Bib Pants
From the very first rides, the insulated Powerline bib pants stood out for their comfort. The fit is excellent, warmth is well distributed, and freedom of movement is exceptional. Even after several hours of pushing through deep snow, there was no moisture infiltration or dampness.
Insulated R-200 Crossover Jacket
The insulated R-200 Crossover jacket demonstrated outstanding waterproofing. For example, during one of my last rides, I was caught in a heavy downpour at the base of the mountain. Despite the intensity of the rain, the jacket kept me dry. I did notice a slight trace of moisture around the neck, but this is not unusual for this type of cut, especially in sustained rain. Otherwise, there was no water infiltration.

5Tech membrane
Even in deep snow, the jacket’s 5Tech membrane performed flawlessly, maintaining a perfect balance between warmth and breathability. From start to finish, I stayed dry and comfortable, with no sensation of overheating.

Even in deep snow, the membrane did an excellent job, maintaining a perfect balance between warmth and breathability.
The jacket is somewhat stiff, especially with the insulated liner installed. However, it softens quickly and becomes very comfortable once the liner is removed for off-trail riding. This option makes the top truly versatile and ready for a wide range of snow conditions.
Saber Single BOA Boots
The Saber boots are one of the highlights of this ensemble. Insulation is excellent: even in the coldest part of winter, my feet never felt cold. Their firmer structure provides a strong sense of stability and security, both on the running boards and while walking. They also offer outstanding value for money, combining comfort, performance, and durability without compromise.
Free Range Gloves
The Free Range gloves strike a great balance between warmth and dexterity. Their generous insulation keeps hands warm without sacrificing control. I was able to easily operate the handlebars, goggles, and controls, even after several hours of riding.

The glove softens quickly and becomes comfortable to wear once the insulated liner is removed.
FZN LVL 1 Party Suit One-Piece Base Layer
Finally, the FZN LVL 1 Party Suit one-piece base layer acts as an effective thermal foundation. It retains heat, wicks moisture efficiently, and remains comfortable to wear, even during more physically demanding sections. Its only drawback is the zipper, which is too short and makes putting it on a bit cumbersome.
Strengths and Areas for Improvement
The insulated R-200 Crossover jacket perfectly fulfills its hybrid role. Not overly warm, it remains comfortable during physical effort while still offering sufficient insulation for trail riding. The complete ensemble shines for its versatility and consistent comfort. Special mention goes to the Powerline bib pants, a true favourite: warm, flexible, and low-profile.
