Before getting into the heart of the matter, we would like to thank the dealership Grégoire Sport for the loan of this test snowmobile. Their collaboration makes it possible to test machines in real trail conditions.
As you may know, last spring marked a turning point for the industry. In April, a group of investors bought Arctic Cat. The announcement reassured enthusiasts across North America. For several months, many were wondering what the future held for the brand. The answer is now clear: CAT is back!
And to prove it, the brand is offering innovative machines. The Arctic Cat EXT Special 858 ATAC 2026 is an excellent example. This trail snowmobile combines power, technology, and modern ergonomics.
After several kilometres of riding, here is my complete analysis.
A Lively and Expressive 858 Engine
At the heart of the 2026 EXT Special is the 858 two-stroke engine. It represents the modern evolution of the sporty trail engine. From the very first kilometres, the throttle response surprises me. Acceleration is sharp and very quick. The engine climbs rapidly through the rev range. And the power comes on without hesitation.
On long straightaways, the snowmobile keeps pulling hard. Mid-range acceleration is particularly impressive. Coming out of corners, the engine launches the snowmobile forward with authority. This characteristic appeals to riders who enjoy a sporty riding style, and I am one of them.
The mechanical sound also adds to the pleasure. A two-stroke engine offers a sound signature that many enthusiasts love, and this 858 engine is no exception. On a well-groomed trail, the snowmobile makes you want to squeeze the throttle even more, and that is a very good sign!
Power Steering: The Silent Revolution of the EXT Special 858
The 2026 Arctic Cat EXT Special 858 marks a major turning point in the evolution of trail snowmobiles. For the first time in the production of two-stroke snowmobiles, a manufacturer has integrated electronic power steering, radically transforming the riding experience. This innovation does not simply lighten the handlebars: it redefines the very dynamics of the snowmobile.
A New Riding Philosophy
With a steering angle of 37º, the EXT compares to a traditional snowmobile showing 62 degrees without assistance. In this respect, EPS completely changes the game. I found that the integrated electric motor amplifies every rider movement, eliminates almost all feedback through the handlebars, and stabilizes steering in bumps. The result is increased precision, reduced fatigue, and renewed confidence, even during long riding days.
A Modernized Experience
By combining a reduced steering angle with intelligent assistance, the EXT Special 858 delivers steering that is smoother, more stable, and more predictable. Tight turns become fluid, long outings become less tiring, and the snowmobile gains precision without sacrificing manoeuvrability. I sincerely believe this snowmobile is entering a new era: one where technology pushes the limits of comfort and control without giving up raw performance.
ATAC Suspension: Instant Adjustment on the Trail
The suspension plays an essential role in the performance of a trail snowmobile. On the EXT Special 858, Arctic Cat offers the ATAC system (Arctic Cat Adjustable on the Fly), a technology that allows the suspension’s behaviour to be quickly adapted to current conditions.
In concrete terms, this system allows the rider to adjust shock firmness directly from the handlebars, without having to stop. In just a few seconds, the rider can change the character of the snowmobile to suit the type of trail or their riding style. Three modes are available: Soft, Medium and Firm. Each one changes the suspension response in order to provide a different level of comfort and performance.
Soft Suspension Mode for Comfort
The Soft mode clearly prioritizes comfort. In this configuration, the suspension effectively absorbs bumps and trail irregularities. Vibrations felt by the rider are reduced, and the ride becomes much smoother. This mode is especially appreciated during long rides or when the trails become rougher. It helps reduce fatigue and maintain a good level of comfort for several hours of riding.
Medium Suspension Mode for More Precision
The Medium mode, meanwhile, represents an excellent compromise between comfort and performance. The suspension maintains good bump-absorbing capability while delivering more precision in corners and during changes of direction. It is generally the most frequently used mode, since it suits a wide variety of trail conditions. For many snowmobilers, it is the ideal setting for versatile riding.
Firm Suspension Mode for Sporty Riding
Finally, the Firm mode transforms the snowmobile into a true performance machine. The shocks become firmer, which improves high-speed stability and cornering precision. The snowmobile stays planted on the trail and responds very directly to the rider’s inputs. This mode is particularly effective when the trail is fast and well groomed, or when the rider wants to adopt a more aggressive riding style.
ATAC: Simple Adaptive Suspension
Out on the trail, I find the ATAC system impressive for its simplicity and effectiveness. The mode change happens instantly and requires only a simple press on the handlebar control. This quick response allows the snowmobile to be adjusted in real time as trail conditions evolve.
During my test, the Soft mode proved very effective on bumpy sections, noticeably improving comfort. On the other hand, on a fast and well-groomed trail, I preferred the Firm mode, which gave me better control and greater steering precision.
This adaptability is one of the major strengths of the EXT Special 858 and of Arctic Cat snowmobiles equipped with it. Thanks to the ATAC system, the snowmobile can easily go from comfortable riding to sporty riding simply by changing modes. It is a very appreciable versatility that allows me to make the most of every kilometre of trail.
Low Windshield Installed by Grégoire Sport
The snowmobile used during my test featured an interesting modification carried out by the Grégoire Sport team. The original windshield, a medium-height blue-tinted model, was replaced with a low windshield, which subtly changes the character of the snowmobile. I must admit that the stock windshield did not meet my aesthetic criteria, and I believe the Grégoire Sport team shared the same opinion.
This type of modification may seem simple, but it truly influences the riding experience. By reducing the height of the windshield, protection from the wind decreases. The rider therefore feels more of the air and surrounding elements, which heightens the sensations of speed and immersion on the trail.
On the other hand, this choice gives the snowmobile a much sportier style. The overall lines become more aggressive and more refined, which perfectly matches the dynamic temperament of the EXT Special 858. Forward visibility is also improved, since the field of vision is less obstructed.
On the trail, this configuration reinforces the sporty character of the machine. On a fast trail, the wind is felt more, but the experience also becomes more direct and engaging. I feel the speed and the environment more intensely, which adds to the enjoyment for riders like me who enjoy active riding.
ICE Ripper XT Track: My Favourite
The track plays a decisive role in the behaviour of a snowmobile. It directly influences traction, stability, and rider confidence, regardless of trail conditions. On the EXT Special 858, Arctic Cat chose the studded ICE Ripper XT, a track known for its efficiency and versatility.
What makes the ICE Ripper XT unique lies in its design. It features studs moulded directly into the lugs, which eliminates the need to install additional studs. This configuration offers an excellent balance between performance, durability, and safety, while considerably improving grip on icy surfaces.
Performance in All Conditions
On a hard-packed snow trail, traction is immediately noticeable. The track grips effectively and transfers the engine’s power to the ground with confidence. Acceleration becomes strong and consistent, which gives the rider a great deal of confidence.
When the surface becomes icy, the integrated studs fully demonstrate their usefulness. They bite into the ice effectively, which improves stability and reduces the risk of losing traction. Braking also becomes safer, because the track maintains good grip even in more difficult conditions.
In corners, this added traction translates into a snowmobile that is more stable and more predictable. The machine stays well anchored in the trail and allows the rider to attack corners with greater precision.
Personal Impression
For my part, the ICE Ripper XT remains one of my favourite tracks for a trail snowmobile. It offers remarkable grip through almost all the conditions encountered during winter. Whether on groomed snow, on icy surfaces, or on a more variable trail, it always delivers a very high level of confidence.
In the end, this track contributes as much to safety as it does to the snowmobile’s overall performance. For a sporty machine like the EXT Special 858, it is simply a perfectly suited choice.
Simple and Effective Running Boards
Running boards are often a discreet element on a snowmobile, but their design directly influences rider control and stability. On the EXT Special 858, Arctic Cat chose to use very durable running boards that stand out for both their strength and functionality.
I quickly noticed that the grip offered by these running boards is very effective. The surface provides excellent traction for boots, which helps maintain a stable posture even during dynamic riding. Feet stay firmly in place, which improves the snowmobile’s precision and control.
Another important advantage concerns the evacuation of snow. The design of the running boards allows accumulated snow to escape easily, preventing it from building up under the boots. This characteristic helps maintain good grip throughout the ride.
Garmin G8 Gauge: Technology and Clarity at the Handlebars
The Garmin G8 gauge first stands out with its bright 8-inch colour display that is easy to read in all conditions. Even in full sunlight or in a strong glare off the snow, the information remains very visible. The interface is simple and intuitive, which allows me to navigate easily through the various menus.
The gauge obviously displays the basic information, such as speed, engine rpm, temperature, and fuel level, but it goes much further. It also offers advanced functions, such as GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and the display of additional snowmobile data. This combination of information and features turns the dashboard into a true control centre.
On the trail, using the Garmin G8 proves particularly enjoyable. The screen reacts quickly, and the menus are well organized, which allows me to find the desired information quickly. The system also adds a modern technological dimension that integrates perfectly with the innovative spirit of the snowmobile.
Personally, I really appreciate this gauge. Its readability, ease of use, and numerous features make it a very practical tool during rides. It allows all the important data to stay in view while adding a touch of modernity to the riding experience. For me, the Garmin G8 is clearly one of the most complete and pleasant dashboards to use in the snowmobile industry.
A Snowmobile Designed to Attack the Trail
After several trail outings, the personality of the EXT Special 858 quickly becomes obvious. This snowmobile was designed for snowmobilers who like to ride hard and make the most of every kilometre of trail.
As soon as the pace picks up, the machine reveals its full potential. It feels especially at ease on fast trails, where its stability and precision allow a sustained pace to be maintained with confidence. In tighter sections, it also demonstrates excellent behaviour. Tight corners link together fluidly, and the snowmobile settles easily into the chosen line.
Several technical elements contribute to this efficiency. Electronic power steering considerably reduces the effort required at the handlebars, which reduces rider fatigue during long outings. For its part, the ATAC suspension allows the snowmobile’s behaviour to be quickly adapted to trail conditions, whether they are bumpy or perfectly groomed.
The Catalyst platform also plays an important role in this feeling of control. Its ergonomics promote a natural riding position and allow the rider to shift body weight easily, which improves precision in corners and during changes of direction.
Finally, the ICE Ripper XT track adds an extra measure of confidence. Its excellent grip ensures strong acceleration, safer braking, and increased stability in turns.
In the end, all these elements work together in perfect harmony. The result is a very well-balanced snowmobile that inspires confidence and naturally encourages a sporty and dynamic riding style. With the EXT Special 858, every ride becomes an invitation to attack the trail and fully enjoy the pleasure of riding.
The Feline’s Return Is Very Real
The industry was watching Arctic Cat’s situation, and enthusiasts were too. The buyout changed the atmosphere, and today the energy is different. The new models show clear ambition, and the EXT Special 858 is proof of it. Innovation, performance, and enjoyment come together.
The feline did not disappear… it is coming back with very sharp claws.
