Rift Clothing and Klutch GTX BOA Boots from KLIM: A Higher Level of Comfort!

During the winter of 2025, I once again had the task of putting KLIM snowmobile apparel to the test. After some research, I selected the Rift jacket and pants, as well as the Klutch GTX BOA boots. You’ll understand later why these specific models stood out to me.

I’m often surprised by how frequently riders ask me for advice on snowmobile clothing. The question that comes up most often is: does this brand offer good protection against the cold? My answer is simple, yet nuanced. All brands offer clothing adapted to the type of rider you are. You simply have to look beyond the aesthetic appeal.

Your choice should be based primarily on design features. Gear intended for backcountry riders won’t suit a trail rider, and vice versa. When physical effort is higher, less insulation is preferred. For a trail rider, greater protection is a major advantage.

Since I personally ride exclusively on trails, I chose gear offering increased protection against harsh weather and cold. On KLIM’s website, the selection process is straightforward. By clicking on “Snow”, the system displays the best options for your style of riding. I selected “Trail,” and KLIM directed me to the appropriate gear.

KLIM Rift Jacket: Ideal for Trail Riding

My many years in this field have greatly simplified my gear choices. I know that the insulation I prefer is around 200 g. So I just needed to dig a little deeper to find a jacket that met that requirement.

On the product page for the KLIM Rift jacket, I noticed that its insulation is rated at 180 g. That falls within the range I look for. This model also comes in several colour options. I chose the safe classics: black and high-visibility yellow. The KLIM logo on the front stands out clearly, leaving no doubt of its origin.

My first impression was the quality and durability of the materials used for this jacket. Snowmobiling often exposes us to branches and unpredictable obstacles. There’s nothing more frustrating than a tear. This jacket is specifically designed to last, with its GORE-TEX construction. Considering the cost of today’s gear, the expectation of wearing it for several seasons is very reassuring.

The KLIM Rift jacket also features a removable hood. Personally, this isn’t an important feature, nor is it something that influences my choices. To be honest, I’ve always found hoods more cumbersome than useful. In this case, when I pull it over my head, it drops down to my eyes. Visibility is definitely compromised. In my opinion, this is more of a stylistic feature than a functional one.

Ascent Float System (AFS): KLIM’s Flotation Technology

One of the standout features of the KLIM Rift jacket is its flotation system. The Ascent Float System (AFS) is a flexible, breathable, closed-cell foam integrated by KLIM. It provides flotation benefits without compromising mobility or comfort. These inserts are strategically placed to help save lives in the event of breaking through ice on a river or lake.

This increases the jacket’s insulation by 60 g. However, I would have liked the option to remove the flotation panels. For example, I find the jacket bulky when packing it in my luggage. And on warmer days, I would have liked to be able to remove this extra bulk. I must admit that I did not test its ability to actually float… nor do I intend to.

Ventilation on the KLIM Rift Jacket: Some Improvements Needed

The biggest drawback of the Rift jacket, in my opinion, is its limited ventilation. Despite the long zippers under the arms, I struggled to cool down when necessary. Compared to the Keweenaw jacket I wore last winter, the back vents on that model were far more effective.

Interior Storage on the Rift Jacket: A Noticeable Absence

Aside from the front pockets, there is no interior storage in the Rift jacket. I would have greatly appreciated a protected space for my phone, for example. Is this an oversight? Or would an internal pocket interfere with the flotation panel at the front? I’m not sure. But to me, it’s a missing feature.

KLIM Rift Pants: A Strong Trail-Focused Complement

The perfect match for the jacket is undoubtedly the bib pants designed to pair with it. The Rift pants share many of the same features as the jacket. They are available in three different lengths to suit as many riders as possible. At nearly six feet tall, the standard length fits me perfectly.

The KLIM Rift pants highlight high-end features. They incorporate strategically mapped flotation foam using the AFS water-repellent technology.

KLIM designed these pants with durable overlays in high-wear areas. I saw no signs of premature wear on the knees, the inner boot panels, or the lower hems. This is promising—and proof of the manufacturer’s commitment to producing quality products.

I’m a rider who frequently braces my knees against the sled during more aggressive riding. KLIM clearly understands this, and the padded reinforcement in these areas is exceptionally comfortable.

KLIM Rift Pants: Recommendations and Potential Adjustments

Despite how much I like the Rift pants, I do have a few recommendations. First, I would have preferred more colour options to match the jacket. Unfortunately, KLIM only offers a single colour. I believe riders would appreciate a bit more variety.

Next, I think the logo could be more prominent. Personally, I would have liked to see the KLIM logo in bright yellow, like on the jacket. This is purely aesthetic, of course, but many consumers enjoy showcasing the brand they’re proud to wear.

KLIM Klutch GTX BOA Boots: Rigidity for Greater Safety!

When I began snowmobiling more than 30 years ago, boots did not offer the quality we have today. Now, we can rely on high-end products with characteristics specifically designed for our sport.

Personally, I really appreciate boots that provide solid ankle support. The KLIM Klutch GTX BOA boots absolutely meet that expectation. At first glance, you can already tell how durable they are and how superior the construction quality is. I have no doubt they’ll stand up to years of hard use.

Did you know KLIM partnered with Michelin for the design of the sole? Yes—the tire company. As a result, these boots offer excellent flexibility, even in extreme cold. Not to mention their outstanding traction on snow, which is a significant advantage.

The BOA lacing system has become a benchmark for this type of boot. I can’t deny its benefits or the speed at which you can tighten the boots for a perfect fit. Releasing them is just as easy—simply pull the adjustment knob, and that’s it.

Klutch GTX BOA Boots: Comfort, Sizing, and Fit

The only drawback of the Klutch GTX BOA boots is the inaccuracy of their sizing. I normally wear a size 12, but in this case, I had to go up to a 14. With two sizes larger, I can put them on and take them off easily. The moulded tongue at the front provides all the room needed for movement.

As you already know, air is an insulator. To avoid cold feet, you need enough room in the boot to wiggle your toes. The Klutch GTX BOA boots offer 800 g of insulation, making them very warm. I never felt discomfort with these exceptionally well-made boots.

In conclusion, I’m fully aware that KLIM products are among the most expensive on the market. However, considering their quality and durability, KLIM gear is a logical investment. For me, there’s no price for being comfortable while practising my favourite winter activity!
