Testing CKX Trail Snowmobile Gear: Warmth, Comfort, and Surprises

Mon essai CKX en sentier : chaleur, confort et vraies surprises

The Trail Snowmobile Gear That Took Me by Surprise

After several years of loyal service, it was definitely time to renew my snowmobile gear. I tested products from various brands without paying much attention to CKX. Despite having a long-standing love affair with their Titan and Mission helmets, I had never really explored their apparel lineup. In my mind, I was still holding on to an opinion formed 25 years ago. Back then, CKX gear was more closely associated with entry-level products.

CKX Kelton Jacket: A True Standout

While browsing through the manufacturer’s selection of jackets, my eye was quickly drawn to the CKX Kelton model. Although the “Olive Night” colour immediately caught my attention, it was the list of key features that ultimately convinced me.

Kelton Jacket Features

  • Parka-style length (no chance of cold air getting in at the back);
  • PrimaLoft insulation: 300 g in the body and 250 g in the sleeves (very warm);
  • Sealed seams and water-resistant YKK AquaGuard zippers;
  • Multiple pockets, including a zippered internal mesh pocket (extremely practical);
  • Side ventilation openings with zippers (essential);
  • Warmth rating of 10/10.

My Take After Testing the CKX Kelton Jacket

Testing CKX trail gear: warmth, comfort, and real surprises

The lightweight feel of the CKX Kelton jacket truly impressed me, especially considering its level of insulation.

In my opinion, its length is perfectly suited for trail riders. Even if you’re on the taller side, like me, you should appreciate the fit. The front YKK AquaGuard zipper is well designed and works flawlessly. The magnetic storm flaps are a smart touch. The high-collar design with fleece lining is particularly comfortable and does an excellent job of blocking air under the helmet.

I really put it to the test during my first 225 km ride, when the wind chill dropped to -29 °C (-20.2 °F). The Voltez 10K/10K membrane paired with PrimaLoft insulation kept me warm throughout the ride. Credit to CKX for including plenty of exterior and interior pockets. The goggle chamois attached inside the left chest pocket is a nice bonus, as is the loop designed to secure the emergency tether.

Areas for Improvement

While the CKX Kelton jacket is an excellent choice for trail snowmobilers, I would have appreciated additional zippered ventilation under the arms and across the back to better regulate airflow.

CKX Conquer Pants: Comfort and Durability on the Trail

To complement my Kelton jacket, I chose the CKX Conquer pants. Although their styling is fairly classic and they’re only available in black, I really appreciated their comfort. The bib rises high enough, the side elastics are comfortable and do not restrict movement, and the 100 g PrimaLoft insulation does a solid job of keeping you warm. Cordura and Reetex reinforcements in key areas contribute to the overall durability. The suspenders are easy to adjust, and the leg length can be fine-tuned using hook-and-loop closures.

While I’m very satisfied overall, there are two points worth mentioning.

Desired Improvements

  1. When indoors—whether for a meal or a break—I would have liked the side zippers to provide ventilation for my legs, instead of running directly into the insulated lining.
  2. The small metal hooks on the elastic gaiter at the bottom of the legs serve no real purpose and tend to catch unnecessarily on my boots.

CKX Kaelan Gloves: Versatility and Warmth for Riding

For my hands, the CKX Kaelan gloves stood out among the available models.

Their classic look works well in any setting. Although they are unisex, the fit wraps my hands nicely. Classified as hybrid gloves, they’re designed for trail riding as well as occasional off-trail adventures.

I really appreciated their flexibility, which likely comes from the combination of lambskin leather and softshell materials. The goggle wipe on the left index finger may seem trivial to some, but it has proved useful on several occasions.

The 120 g of Thinsulate insulation on the back of the hand and 60 g in the palm kept my hands warm throughout our rides. I followed the sizing chart on their website, and the fit was spot on.

CKX Colchester Pro Boots: The True Highlight of the Test

I saved my biggest highlight for last: the CKX Colchester Pro boots.

The moment I slipped my foot into the boot, I was sold. Comfort, overall support, and ease of adjustment are all spot on. Sizing also matches my usual shoe size perfectly.

I tested the Colchester Pro boots in soft snow, slush, during spirited riding, and even through unavoidable water crossings. Their waterproof membrane and insulation rated down to -60 °C (-76 °F) kept my feet dry and warm every time. The high-density rubber outsole also provides excellent traction.

Honourable mention to CKX for the removable liner design. It helps eliminate any potential moisture and is very easy to remove and reinstall.

The only minor drawback I noticed was the initial tightening of the upper BOA system. I had to turn the dial several times before the tongue began to make contact with my foot. That said, the many advantages of the CKX Colchester Pro boots make this a very minor issue.

Final Verdict on This CKX Trail Gear

Honestly, this CKX snowmobile gear setup completely overturned my old preconceptions. The CKX Kelton jacket proved to be extremely warm and well thought out. The rugged CKX Conquer pants delivered excellent comfort. The CKX Kaelan gloves stood out for their efficiency and versatility. Every piece of the setup performed as intended. Still, it was the CKX Colchester Pro boots that truly stole the show. Comfort, warmth, waterproofing, and traction—they check every box, even in demanding conditions.

Yes, there are a few small details that could be refined. Overall, though, CKX has shown me that they belong among the top-tier brands. This is quality gear, designed by people who genuinely understand the needs of trail snowmobilers. If, like me, you were holding on to an outdated opinion of this manufacturer, it’s time to rethink it.
