Nestled between the St. Lawrence River, the Chic-Chocs Mountains, and Chaleur Bay, Gaspésie is one of the most popular destinations for snowmobilers in Québec. Its vast trail network, spectacular scenery, and warm hospitality make the region an exceptional winter playground. In addition to offering excellent snow quality, the region is known for the reliability of its winter, which typically lasts from mid-January to mid-March, depending on the area. Whether you’re visiting for a few days or taking the full tour, Gaspésie will let you experience the extraordinary with ease. Here is everything you need to know to plan your next snowmobile trip to Gaspésie.

Rides to Discover

Gaspésie features over 3,000 km of groomed and marked trails, carefully maintained by well-established local clubs. These trails wind through a variety of landscapes: snow-covered mountains, pristine forests, coastal cliffs, and welcoming villages. Depending on the amount of time you have, several itineraries are available.

The Grand Tour of Gaspésie, a loop of about 1,000 km, allows you to circle the entire peninsula in 5 to 6 days. It’s an adventure to experience at least once in a lifetime, and the top choice for snowmobilers who want to see everything without compromise.

Short on time? The Petite Gaspésie Ouest circuit is an ideal alternative. This roughly 700 km route can be completed in 2 to 3 days and lets you discover the essentials: the Chic-Choc Mountains, the famous Percé Rock, and maritime scenery. It’s a ride that blends wild nature with charming villages, an ideal getaway for a change of scenery.

Good news: the trail connecting La Cache and Murdochville will reopen this winter. This important section, once again, makes it possible to complete the Chic-Chocs loop, a highly appreciated ride that combines Trans-Québec 5, Trail 595, a local trail between La Cache and Murdochville, and Trail 597.

You can view details about these itineraries and discover even more options in the blog post 5 Snowmobile Rides in Gaspésie on the Tourisme Gaspésie website.

Must-See Viewpoints

Few regions offer viewpoints as spectacular as those in Gaspésie. Here are a few worthwhile stops, easily accessible by snowmobile:

The Chic-Choc Mountains, which rise over 1,000 metres, are particularly impressive in winter. The new lookout near Saint-Jean-de-Cherbourg, in Matanie, offers a stunning view of these peaks.

Percé Rock, an icon of the region, is majestic under snow. It can be admired from the summit of Mount Saint-Anne, located in Percé and accessible via local trails. As a bonus, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the village and Bonaventure Island.

The St. Lawrence River, seen from the summit at Mont-Saint-Pierre, stretches as far as the eye can see. This mountain offers a vista of the village nestled in a cove, the sea, and even the North Shore on clear days. Plus, just 0.6 km from the trail, Mount Bernèche provides another very impressive viewpoint over the surrounding mountains.

Tips for Planning Your Trip

Before heading out on a snowmobile ride, it’s essential to prepare properly. Start by checking trail conditions on iMotoneige or on the interactive map available on the FCMQ website. This will help you adjust your route based on daily conditions. Also note an important change expected this winter: the Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine bridge will be closed for the season. A shuttle is currently being considered to allow passage, but it is recommended to check for possible alternatives before you leave.

As in any mountain region, conditions can vary quickly between coastal areas and inland or higher-altitude sectors. Make sure you have complete equipment suited to all situations. Also note that some areas do not have cellular coverage. Remember to book your accommodations, especially if you are travelling in a group or during busy periods. To simplify your planning, several Tourisme Gaspésie members offer snowmobile packages, including lodging and meals. Finally, don’t forget to order the Gaspésie snowmobile Trail map, a valuable tool to help you plan your adventure.
