Test Ride: 2024 Ski-Doo Backcountry Sport 600 EFI—An Accessible Snowmobile for Everyone!

Who Am I as a Snowmobiler?

I’m a trail rider first with a sporty style and an easy throttle hand. Having almost always ridden a Yamaha Attak, I’ve developed a strong affinity for performance and adrenaline on the trails. However, exploring off trail is a whole other challenge for me. This review of the 2024 Ski-Doo Backcountry Sport 600 EFI was therefore a unique experience: that of a trail-experienced rider venturing off groomed trails for the first time!

I noticed that most hybrid snowmobile reviews are done by riders who are already experienced in off-trail riding. Their expertise is undeniable, and their analyses are valuable. However, my approach is different; my article speaks to snowmobilers like me—those who dominate the trails but hesitate to venture beyond the groomed surface!

My Test Conditions with the Backcountry 600 EFI

I tested the 2024 Ski-Doo Backcountry Sport 600 EFI in several conditions:

  • On private land, in a family setting
  • On federated trails, solo and with a child as passenger
  • Off trail, in deep snow

Presentation of My 2024 Ski-Doo Backcountry Sport 600 EFI

The snowmobile under test is the entry-level model in Ski-Doo’s Backcountry category. It is the 2024 Backcountry Sport, equipped with the Rotax 600 EFI engine.

Equipment and Features

  • Two-stroke Rotax engine, 600 cc with electronic fuel injection (EFI), 85 hp
  • Intermediate option between the 600 ACE (60 hp) and the 600R E-TEC (125 hp)
  • Track 146 in. long, 15 in. wide, 1.6 in. lug height
  • 4.5 in. monochrome LCD screen showing speed, RPM, fuel, odometer, etc.
  • Heated grips included (no heated helmet outlet)
  • Low-profile windshield
  • REV Gen4 chassis
  • Two-up seat (no heated rear grips)

The Backcountry 600 EFI in a Family Context: Its Great Strength

To get familiar with the snowmobile, I started my test in a family context at the cabin. This model, designed to be accessible and affordable, proved very effective in simple conditions without seeking extreme performance.

On private terrain, I appreciated its manoeuvrability in powder. Light and easy to handle, it is ideal for snowmobilers beginning in off trail.

I also towed three three-ski sleds with the kids for several hours. The Backcountry 600 EFI accomplishes the job without difficulty; my kids loved it! However, be careful: at low speeds on hard-packed trails, there’s a tendency for engine overheating.

In short, this entry-level Backcountry is suited for recreational use: small private trails, family outings, and open field rides.

The Backcountry 600 EFI on Trail: Watch the Stability

I rode more than 500 km on federated trails. For 85 hp, acceleration is lively—0 to 70 km/h comes quickly. The Rotax responds instantly. Beyond 90 km/h, it runs out of breath a little but remains efficient.

Main issue: ski width (39 in.). In corners, stability is limited and forces you to slow down. Even on bumps or uneven terrain, the snowmobile tends to tip.

With a passenger, the ride is pleasant, though it lacks heated rear grips.

For relaxed trail riding, the Backcountry 600 EFI gets the job done. For more aggressive riding, a 43 in ski width is preferable. Good news: starting in 2026, Ski-Doo will offer this option across the entire Backcountry lineup (Sport, Adrenaline, X, XRS).

The Backcountry 600 EFI in Deep Snow: Caution for Beginners

From my first rides in deep snow, my lack of experience showed. Fortunately, the sled’s lightness helps a lot. The engine is lively, and the track reacts instantly.

However, the 146 in. track with 1.6 in. lugs requires technique. A 2 in. or more track would have offered more traction. That said, getting unstuck is easier than with a heavier snowmobile. A shovel and a little lift on the skis, and you’re good to go again.

For a first time in deep snow, it was technically difficult but fun. For beginners: consider taller lugs and a longer track.

Summary of the 2024 Ski-Doo Backcountry 600 EFI Test

Accessible, agile, and pleasant for family and recreational use. Ideal for powder at the cabin and moderate trail rides. The engine surprises with its responsiveness. Trail stability could be improved, but the 43 in option planned for 2026 changes the game for trail lovers.
