Preseason Analysis of the 2025 Ski-Doo Backcountry X-RS

This year, I have the opportunity to test the Ski-Doo Backcountry X-RS. It’s a model I’ve had the chance to try in previous years in different configurations and with various engines. This time, I’ll be testing it on the new fifth-generation chassis, featuring the renowned 850 cc E-TEC engine, the optional 39-inch ski stance, and a 154-inch track with 2-inch lugs. In short, it’s a more “mountain-oriented” version of this machine. Ski-Doo enthusiasts will recognize the X-RS version for its premium suspension and distinctive styling. My goal with this test is to determine whether this machine has the potential to be the ultimate Swiss Army knife in Ski-Doo’s lineup.

I will be assessing the Backcountry X-RS 2025’s performance on both trails and in the mountains. On the trails, I’ll evaluate its cornering ability, acceleration, stability in maneuvers, tendency to dart, and braking performance. For mountain riding, I’ll focus on its ability to break through deep snow, maintain a sidehill line, accelerate in powder, and handle technical maneuvers. In short, I have big plans for the winter and will be hoping for plenty of snow.

Backcountry X-RS 2025: A Sled Unlike Any Other

The Ski-Doo Backcountry has intrigued me ever since its official debut in 2018. Back then, it was known as the Renegade Backcountry. I dreamed of that blue and green Backcountry back then—it was a machine that blended impressive crossover capabilities with surprising off-trail prowess. I longed for it back then.

I dreamed of that blue and green Backcountry back then.

Life sometimes unfolds in spectacular ways! By sheer chance, I began my career as a snowmobile columnist on a 2019 X-RS. I was part of a video shoot with a team of 509 pro riders. That ride was my first experience with an 850 cc engine. Believe me, it didn’t take much to convince me that this engine had some serious muscle.

By sheer chance, I began my career as a snowmobile columnist on a 2019 X-RS.

Later, I had the chance to ride a Backcountry Sport with a 600 EFI engine for an entire season. That’s when I realized that power isn’t everything. That year, riding the 85 hp Backcountry Sport, I discovered the true essence of our sport: having fun in the snow. That snowmobile floated effortlessly over the snow with surprising ease. It was light, nimble, and could take me just about anywhere I wanted. I’m hoping for that same floatability in this new iteration. I want to experience that weightless sensation again… to feel as if I’m floating on a cloud.

My Backcountry Sport from back then was decent on the trails. Sure, the skis occasionally lifted, but overall, it was a fun machine to ride on groomed paths. That said, I’m expecting more from the 2025 Backcountry, especially in the X-RS trim. I’ve opted for a narrower front end and a longer, more aggressive track. Even with these off-trail-oriented specs, I still hope to see improved trail performance compared to my previous test.

A Premium Machine From Ski-Doo

The Backcountry X-RS 2025 I have in my hands is truly impressive in terms of instrumentation. Its 10.25-inch display offers a wealth of features that I’m eager to explore. I’m particularly excited to test its smartphone connectivity and the BRP GO! app, which allows for navigation and trip planning directly from a phone.

Among the high-end components, the RAS X front suspension paired with KYB PRO 36 shocks stands out. The rear suspension, featuring cMotion X and KYB PRO 40 shocks, is also promising. This sled should be able to handle rough and technical terrain with ease. I’m looking forward to evaluating its ride comfort and sporty handling characteristics.

The 2025 Backcountry’s design also deserves mention. The X-RS package includes a unique colour scheme not often seen on Ski-Doo models. Instead of the usual “Ski-Doo yellow,” we get a striking mix of yellow and lime green. In person, the colour is eye-catching, though it’s surprisingly difficult to capture in photos. In my opinion, however, it’s a major success! The same colour is found on this year’s Freeride and Expedition Xtreme models.

A Busy Winter: Putting the Backcountry X-RS 2025 to the Test

As you can see, I have a packed winter ahead. I’m hoping for enough snow to truly push the Backcountry X-RS 2025 to its limits. On paper, it has the potential to be one of the best models for tackling Quebec’s riding conditions. My goal is to rigorously assess this X-RS edition of the Ski-Doo Backcountry and put it through a variety of conditions. Given my extensive experience with previous versions of this machine, I’m particularly interested in highlighting the improvements and changes introduced in this fifth-generation model.

This test is made possible thanks to Ski-Doo, which has generously provided this machine for the entire winter. For more information on the Backcountry X-RS 2025, I encourage you to visit the manufacturer’s website. Also, follow us on SledMagazine.com to see the results of my evaluation. With that, I wish you all a great start to the season!
