Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 2025: A Powerful Backcountry Snowmobile Designed for Agility

Here I am, taking my first spins on the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 2025. In its third year of production, the Khaos Slash variant shows significant changes in the machine’s weight. Indeed, there’s a reduction of 6.5 lbs compared to the 2024 edition. This difference mainly comes from the redesign of the hood, seat, and the new geometry of the running boards.

Additionally, since its unveiling in spring 2022, the powerful 899 cc Patriot 9R engine has set a new standard for backcountry snowmobiles. The enthusiasm for this engine remains just as palpable in 2025!

It’s worth noting that the Matryx chassis helps manage the estimated 170 hp to 180 hp of the Patriot 9R engine. Moreover, the Walker Evans external reservoir shocks absorb the sneaky bumps you might encounter when pushing this machine to its limits.

This is the essence of the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 2025!

Anticipation and Excitement: Deep Snow Performance with the RMK Khaos Slash

This is my second year of long-term testing with an RMK Khaos Slash 155. Considering the improved lightweight design of the 2025 model, I was eagerly anticipating a lot of fun with this snowmobile. Manufacturers widely consider the 155-inch tunnel as the go-to option for versatility.

For my test, I chose the 3.25-inch Series 9 track. This track is renowned for its bite in deep snow and its flexibility for tackling mountain slopes. In practice, it lives up to its reputation with remarkable efficiency! Its lugs are neither too soft nor too hard. This lightweight 15-inch-wide track delivers stunning deep snow performance! The dual drive sprockets and QuickDrive 2 transmission ensure flawless engagement and responsiveness.

Although its replacement cost is high in case of damage, the Series 9 track remains a favourite among snowmobilers in the West! As for its use in Quebec, opinions are mixed. In my view, a 2.5-inch or 2.75-inch track would be more suitable due to the snow conditions here.

The RMK Khaos Adapted to Quebec Conditions

The RMK Khaos Slash meets the expectations of Quebec snowmobilers. The near-instantaneous power transfer shines in tight spots like trenches, riverbanks, and close trees. Although the power band feels short, it’s ideal and very reliable for our terrain!

For the second consecutive year, I’ve been testing my snowmobile in Quebec and the Canadian West. There, you can easily reach altitudes between 1,500 m and 2,200 m.

Regarding the clutch, Polaris has modified its P22 primary pulley for the third time since its release three years ago. Despite this, I’ve had no issues so far!

In my opinion, this issue mainly affects expert riders in the West. They put heavy loads on the transmission for extended periods. Combined with the increased heat from the larger Patriot 9R engine, the P22 transmission can suffer. This thermal load, due to excessive use of all components, contributes to wear.

To respect the engine RPM ratios for the desired altitude, here are the data from my 2023 and 2024 tests:

Primary Pulley

  • Low altitude: 3-ramp 14–80 (0 m to 900 m)
  • High altitude: 3-ramp 14–74 (900 m to 2,000 m)
  • High altitude: 3-ramp 14–72 (2,000 m and above)

Secondary Pulley

  • Low altitude: Cam 60/42/0.36
  • High altitude: Cam 56/42/0.36

Note: Don’t be surprised if the engine reads between 8,350 RPM and 8,400 RPM!

7S Display and RIDE COMMAND: Technology for Snowmobilers

Although not new, the RIDE COMMAND system with the 7S display is one of my favourite features on my RMK Khaos Slash! Despite some minor accuracy issues with location tracking, the 7S display impresses with its ease of use. For 2025, Polaris has modified the joystick-style selector button, which previously had a tendency to detach and get lost easily.

The key feature of the RIDE COMMAND navigation system is the group ride function, which allows you to track your adventure companions directly on the screen. I also find the option to create reusable or shareable routes interesting. However, I must note that the geolocation system isn’t flawless. It doesn’t always work, and I don’t fully understand why it performs well one day and not the next.

Despite these drawbacks, the rugged seven-inch touchscreen is well designed for backcountry use. I particularly like its large size, brightness, and simplicity. The touch function is responsive, even with gloves. The rich and varied menus allow you to customize the display to your needs. You’ll have easy access to information like speed, tachometer, fuel level, etc. Finally, I also appreciate its aesthetic appeal.

Reliability and Maintenance of the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 2025

So far, the Patriot 9R engines have proven reliable… though some issues persist. I’m thinking specifically of the primary pulley spider (P22) repairs for West Coast riders. One of the main concerns is the centre bolt, which Polaris replaced in 2025. The manufacturer recommends daily torque checks, set at 110 lb-ft. In addition to the new primary pulley spider, the 2025 models also receive a new cover, which should be more durable. That said, I recommend always having a spare bolt and replacement spring for the primary pulley on hand.

I’d also like to highlight the return of the sled rail tips for 2025. These protect the nylon sliders and track. Their absence in 2024 had caused some issues.

Agile Handling With the Matryx Chassis

Thanks to the Matryx chassis, Polaris stands out with its highly responsive snowmobiles designed for the toughest terrains. Those who’ve tried it will tell you the same, I’m sure. Switching from a competitor’s model to the excellent Matryx chassis makes it clear. The combination of this chassis and Gripper skis ensures easy, precise, and light handling. However, I must warn you, it requires an adjustment period for backcountry riding that can be surprising at times.

The 2025 RMK series’s weight reduction puts it at the forefront of its most formidable competitors. I’d like to commend the engineers for their work on the running boards. They allow for better snow clearance, preventing buildup that could add unnecessary weight. Finally, the hood modifications shave off a few more pounds compared to the previous version, significantly lowering the snowmobile’s centre of gravity.

I weigh 145 lbs and stand 5′6″. I can guarantee that these improvements enhance the snowmobile’s efficiency on steep mountain slopes. Although I’d prefer slightly stiffer Gripper skis, the handling of this machine remains incredibly precise.

Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 2025: A Backcountry Snowmobile With Heart!

I’m convinced that the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 2025 will remain a highly sought-after model. This backcountry snowmobile stands out for its agility and the pure joy it brings to ride. Its powerful engine paired with the short-tunnel Matryx chassis impresses with its ability to handle deep snow. Additionally, it features the renowned RMK backcountry handling! Eastern riders will find a responsive machine capable of jumping over any obstacle. Just twist the throttle to lift the nose of the RMK Khaos, and you’re good to go. I can hardly imagine how Polaris will improve this machine in the future—its raw power already amazes me! So far, the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash has won over all our test riders. Will you be one of the lucky few to experience this thrill?

Pros

  • The power of the Patriot 9R engine.
  • Excellent engine-transmission response.
  • Manoeuvrability, lightness, and precise handling.
  • Outstanding deep snow performance.
