Arctic Cat ZR 600 EPS 2026: A Trail Snowmobile Under the Microscope

The Return of a Determined Manufacturer: Arctic Cat Fires Things Back Up

As many of you already know, Arctic Cat is officially back for 2026. In fact, last April we announced this major news on Motoneiges.ca (click here to read). Since then, many have questioned the seriousness of the group of enthusiasts who took over the brand after several years under the Textron era. I was asked about it on more than one occasion during the Quebec City Snowmobile and ATV Show in early November.

Today, we are very pleased to confirm that the manufacturer is truly back and fully committed to reclaiming its rightful market share. Over the past few days, Arctic Cat has officially confirmed its participation in Motoneiges.ca’s long-term test program by joining our partners. In addition, during my visit to our Arctic Cat dealership, Garage J.-M. Villeneuve in Amqui, I was able to see several models available on the showroom floor, with more arriving in the coming weeks.

Analyse pré-randonnée - Arctic Cat ZR 600 EFI 2026

After two years without Arctic Cat snowmobiles in our test fleet, our team will once again have the opportunity to put a 2026 ZR 600 EPS to the test. It is with great enthusiasm that I finally present my pre-ride analysis of this trail snowmobile.

A Key Model in the 2026 Strategy

The ZR 600 EPS occupies a strategic position in Arctic Cat’s lineup. This is a snowmobile designed entirely for sport trail riding, built on the Catalyst chassis. This modern, compact, and rigid platform represents a significant improvement over the previous ProCross chassis.

For 2026, Arctic Cat is clearly focusing on refinement, reliability, and enhancing the riding experience. I am very much looking forward to evaluating these three elements on the trail during my tests.

600 EPS Engine: A Modern and Efficient Powerplant for the ZR 600

At the heart of the ZR 600 EPS is a liquid-cooled 599 cc two-stroke engine equipped with a Dual Stage electronic fuel injection system. This technology ensures optimized combustion, improved throttle response, and a noticeable reduction in emissions.

The engine’s lay-down design under the hood helps lower the snowmobile’s centre of gravity. In theory, this translates into more predictable steering and improved stability when entering corners. We will rigorously validate these characteristics this winter.

Engine Highlights

  • Displacement: 599 cc
  • Configuration: Lay-down inline twin, two-stroke
  • Injection: EFI — Dual Stage Injection
  • Liquid cooling
  • Recommended fuel: 91 octane

It is unfortunate that 600 cc or 650 cc engines are not more appreciated by snowmobile enthusiasts. In my opinion, this type of powerplant more than adequately meets the needs of the majority of riders. Personally, I do not believe that an 800, 850, or even 900 cc engine is necessary, regardless of your riding style. I therefore welcome the opportunity to ride a snowmobile in this category this winter.

EPS Power Steering — The Most Anticipated Addition

Adding EPS (Electric Power Steering) to a 600 cc trail snowmobile is a bold yet highly relevant decision. Power steering not only reduces rider fatigue, but also delivers more consistent and precise handling at all speeds. At Motoneiges.ca, we often embark on long-distance rides, making this feature a potentially significant advantage. I am particularly eager to measure its real-world impact during sporty riding.

Suspension, Handling, and Trail Stability

Let’s now talk about the trail manners of the 2026 ZR 600 EPS. The AWS 42 front suspension, combined with an adjustable ski stance ranging from 41.5 to 42.5 inches, focuses on precision and stability. This setup should provide good terrain feedback while maintaining an agile feel through consecutive corners.

At the Rear, Two Track Configurations Are Available:

  • 129 in. with uncoupled Slide-Action suspension.
  • 137 in. with coupled suspension, more oriented toward stability, comfort, and control over long distances.

At this time, I still do not know whether the snowmobile assigned for my long-term test will be equipped with the 129 in. or 137 in. track. However, I have requested the 137 in. version from the manufacturer. This configuration is far better suited to the Quebec market, our riding distances, and the variable conditions of our long winters. I will confirm this information as soon as possible.

Key Suspension Specifications

  • Rear travel: 13.5 in.
  • Track dimensions (in.): 15 x 129 x 1.25 or 15 x 137 x 1.25
  • Power steering: EPS

Naturally, I am eager to test the performance of the Arctic Cat AC5S shocks fitted at both the front and rear of the snowmobile.

Ergonomics and Riding Position

When it comes to ergonomics and comfort, the Catalyst chassis deserves special mention. It was designed to bring the rider closer to the centre of the snowmobile, resulting in a more natural riding posture and a stronger connection with the front end. Having ridden snowmobiles equipped with this chassis in the past, I can already share some initial observations.

The Catalyst platform brings many improvements, such as the revision of the control block on the handlebar.

Strengths of the Catalyst Chassis:

  • Remarkable agility;
  • Good ability to absorb trail irregularities;
  • Natural riding position;
  • Very balanced cornering behaviour.

Aspects to Monitor During My Tests:

  • Seat comfort;
  • Wind protection effectiveness of the windshield;
  • Access to controls;
  • Overall comfort during long-distance rides.

Weight and Dimensions

With a dry weight of approximately 478 lb (217 kg), the ZR 600 EPS sits favourably within the 600 sport category. Its overall length of 126 inches and adjustable ski stance further reinforce its intended mission: stability, precision, and trail performance.

In this pre-ride analysis, I am offering only an initial look at what the 2026 ZR 600 EPS promises. Over the coming months, I will have the opportunity to put it through its paces by evaluating several key aspects of this trail snowmobile.

Priority Evaluation Points

  • Real-world impact of EPS power steering over long distances;
  • Performance and fuel efficiency of the 600 EFI engine;
  • Rigidity of the Catalyst chassis in rough trails;
  • Precision of the AWS 42 front end;
  • Overall comfort during extended rides;
  • Grip and traction of the 1.25 in. lug track;
  • Behaviour of the 129 in. versus 137 in. versions (if possible).

With this long-term test, my objective is to determine whether the ZR 600 EPS truly represents the strong comeback Arctic Cat is promising for 2026.

Conclusion — A Promising Winter for Arctic Cat

The integration of the 2026 ZR 600 EPS into our test fleet is excellent news, both for our team and for the enthusiasts who follow us. After a few more challenging years, Arctic Cat appears to have regained its momentum, drive, and vision.

As for me, I am very much looking forward to logging hundreds of kilometres to deliver an honest, detailed evaluation grounded in the realities of Quebec trail riding.

Stay tuned: the wild cat is back, and all signs suggest it may surprise more than a few snowmobilers this winter.
