ToggleOutside, the first snowflakes have started to fall and I’m taking advantage of this dark weekend to present you my pre-tour analysis of the Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 850 E-TEC 2023. You will understand that I will have the chance to test this snowmobile during the following season.
As you probably already know, Ski-Doo has introduced a new iteration of its REV platform. Indeed, the GEN5 chassis is the one on which the Renegade X-RS 850 is built in 2023. Let’s take a quick look at the improvements this chassis brings over the previous version.
Chassis improvements
First of all, the changes in the GEN5 platform are not just about the panels and the long-awaited arrival of an LED headlight. No, the changes go far beyond that.
In order to reduce the level of vibration emanating from the engine, a fourth support has been added to the engine. This also allows the pulleys to remain well-aligned during acceleration. A better alignment of the belt allows it not to overheat and thus significantly increases its durability. The performance of the snowmobile will also be maximized at the pulley assembly.
The air circulation in the engine compartment has also been revised. As a result, the cooling of the engine will be improved.
This new GEN5 chassis is also optionally available with a new 10.25″ digital dial set. The latter is more powerful and offers better connectivity than its predecessor. Integration with the BRP Connect application is also improved. Finally, Ski-Doo has moved the dial controls back to the handlebars, which is a big safety benefit.
The switch to LED lighting in the headlight follows the trend we’ve seen in recent years in the competition. According to the manufacturer, the lighting intensity will be 3 times more powerful than on the GEN4 models.
Of course, I’m going to focus on the impact that all these improvements will have on the Renegade X-RS driving experience and performance.
Smart-Shox
The Renegade X-RS 850 E -TEC 2023 I will be riding is also equipped with the Smart-Shox semi-active suspension. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to evaluating the behaviour of this suspension on the GEN5 chassis.
The gain I expect is both in comfort and ease of riding this snowmobile on twisty roads. Indeed, the Smart-Shox system is designed to optimize the level of compression and rebound of the shocks at all times while riding. By taking into account a host of parameters, the shocks are adjusted up to 50 times per second to absorb the imperfections of the trail. In addition, during turns, the Smart-Shox will keep the snowmobile level to maximize the ground contact of the skis.
Ergonomics
Another aspect I will focus on during my test of this snowmobile is the riding position, the comfort of the seat during long rides and the wind protection on the panels. Clearly, with a very sporty-looking windshield, you can’t expect a lot of wind protection on your upper body. In cold weather, I may occasionally opt for a half-high windshield to provide more protection.
I am looking forward to my season on the Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 850 E -TEC 2023 with enthusiasm. As you can see, I will have many things to watch over the next few months.
I would like to thank the manufacturer Ski-Doo for making this test possible.
Have a great season everyone!
