Yamaha Sidewinder SRX 2025 at Auction: A Piece of History Up for Grabs

It’s no longer a secret—Yamaha will cease snowmobile production and sales in 2025 after 57 years of history. However, they have had the brilliant idea of planning an auction for the last Yamaha Sidewinder SRX produced.

Whether you’re a fan of the brand or not, you must admit that Yamaha has forever left its mark on the snowmobile industry. From their founding in 1968 to today, they have created legendary snowmobiles that will remain in everyone’s memory.

The Sidewinder SRX 2025 Stands Out at Snow Shoot 2024!

During our team’s visit to Snow Shoot 2024, we had the privilege of seeing the Yamaha Sidewinder SRX model 001. This first of 998 units undoubtedly caught many eyes and sparked great interest. My colleague, Hugo, and I, of course, made sure to capture this moment. This SRX, sporting the legendary Yamaha blue, features signatures from several key Yamaha figures.

Our colleague, Hugo Lorquet, proudly poses on the Yamaha Sidewinder SRX 2025 No. 001.

The History of the Yamaha SRX

The Yamaha SRX has also left its mark on our imagination. It first appeared as a racing snowmobile in 1974. That year, very few units were hand-built for the emerging professional racing circuit.

The SRX designation was not used in 1975. However, it returned in 1976 and 1977 for oval sprint snowmobiles, produced in limited numbers and made available to independent racers for Stock class competitions. These snowmobiles were designed purely for speed and left turns, featuring aluminum skis, an optional tachometer, and no windshield.

It wasn’t until 1978 that Yamaha finally introduced the SRX as a trail model, available to the general public. However, it retained much of its high-performance DNA, quickly becoming a favourite among speed enthusiasts.

Key Features of the 1978 Yamaha SRX 440

Engine

The SRX 440 (1978) was equipped with a liquid-cooled, two-stroke engine, designed for high performance.

Design

The bodywork kept a sleek, race-inspired design but was modified for increased durability and better trail performance.

Cooling System

The cooling system was improved, featuring a small radiator and heat exchangers for enhanced efficiency.

Additional Features

The 1978 model came standard with a full-gauge package, a redesigned seat, and a 7-gallon fuel tank.

The 1978 SRX 440 quickly gained a reputation for speed and reliability, making it a true classic for vintage snowmobile enthusiasts.

Sidewinder SRX 2025: A Collector’s Opportunity

Yamaha’s North American snowmobile team is pleased to announce that they will auction off the final 2025 Sidewinder SRX, which is the 998th of 998 units produced. The proceeds from this auction will go toward supporting the snowmobiling community for years to come.

The Auction Proceeds Will Support a Good Cause!

Funds raised during the auction will be donated to the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA) Grant Program, supporting the North American snowmobile community.

ISMA represents the four major snowmobile manufacturers and oversees committees that address safety, snowmobile promotion, accurate industry statistics, and economic impact studies.

The auction will be held online for seven days, from February 9 to February 15, 2025. All bidders must have a valid U.S. or Canadian residential address to participate.

A Special Crate for the Last Yamaha Sidewinder SRX 2025

The last Sidewinder SRX 2025 will be delivered in a custom hand-built crate, designed for display and protection during snowmobile events. The 998th Sidewinder SRX 2025 was unveiled at Hay Days in September 2024.

On February 15, 2025, Yamaha will attend the Eagle River Snowmobile Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where they will celebrate Yamaha’s contributions to the industry and announce the winning bidder of the auction.
