The test of the CKX Beyond 3 in 1

As one of the winter protection items to be prioritized, clothing and undergarments are among the items where it is important to give consideration when purchasing them.

For 2020, CKX has kindly asked me to evaluate their new Beyond 3 in 1 collection.

The Drummond firm has designed clothing that is as light and warm as possible to meet the needs of an increasingly demanding clientele.

The Beyond 3 in 1 coats and bibs are the example that many were waiting for. The temperatures I experienced for my tests were 3 °C with rain and mist and freezing temperatures of – 25 °C.

The Beyond 3 in 1 kit includes a brand new removable upper body underlay that does the right job. Indeed, this lining is made of laminated fabric that literally blocks the wind. Combined with the outer jacket, you will be able to face the worst weather conditions. Also, this undercoat is stylish so that it can be used as a single dressing in the evening for after-snowmobiling. CKX thought of those who wanted to match their set to their vehicle with three colours: black, blue and red. I have to confess that they are by far among my favourites for 2020. For milder days, the coat includes two air vents located under the arms. During my tests, I did not feel any fresh air penetrate the collar of the neck or go through the 100% P8-TEX Polyester fabric used by CKX. The outer shell is also equipped with a cap which is greatly appreciated during more extended breaks.

The bib is high and provides optimum protection against the wind that can get between the trousers and the coat. The fabrics used by CKX also protect the lower body from the wind blowing around the snowmobile cab hitting this rather sensitive area. The catch may be that the leg lengths are a bit long compared to the standard of the competition.

Don’t forget that the experienced snowmobiler knows the tips and tricks to protect himself from the cold and the wind adequately. This is why it is recommended to invest in quality base layers and 2 or 3 items that will make you enjoy your rides.

These are my recommendations! First of all, I use two types of underlayers; one of the stretch types for cold weather, and another type of polar for warmer weather. Secondly, since my snowmobile is equipped with a half-height windshield, in cold weather, I use a neck cover with an insulating membrane at chest level. Thirdly, I always bring a second pair of merino wool socks that I replace as soon as I leave a stopover.

The idea is to always stay dry in spite of the driving efforts as well as the different external conditions encountered. CKX have understood this principle and now offer a range of high-quality products that can save you a lot of hassle.
