Polaris Racers Excel on Terrain, Ice Tracks and in Deep Snow Country The Polaris Snowmobile Racing program is on a roll, and racers on RUSH™ and IQ® race sleds powered by Polaris Liberty™ engines have their sights set on numerous titles in virtually every racing discipline this coming winter.
On snocross tracks, ice tracks, in cross-country and at hillclimbs, Polaris racers have the competitive advantage and are determined to pile up wins, points and season titles.
«We direct a lot of resources toward winning in Snocross, and fortunately we’ve been successful there. But we are also committed to winning in other disciplines, and we really like the racers we have on Polaris sleds in ovals, cross-country and hillclimbs,» said Polaris Racing Manager Tom Rager, Sr.
SNOCROSS
Hentges Racing and Judnick Motorsports have formed a technical alliance so they will completely share sled data and will pool resources for sled construction. Tim Bender will serve as Technical Director for both teams, whose racers have consistently finished near the top of the points standings in recent seasons. The two teams are based in the Polaris Race Shop in Wausau, Wisconsin.
On the ISOC circuit last season, the Hentges Racing Pro racers finished 1-2-3 in Pro Open, and they finished in first and third in Pro Super Stock. TJ Gulla won Pro Open and was third in Super Stock, while Levi LaVallee won the Super Stock title and was third in Open. Brett Bender took second in Open points and was named Pro Rookie of the Year.
Defending ISOC Pro Super Stock champion Levi LaVallee is launching his own team this winter. The former Hentges Racing team member will be based in the Wausau shop with the Hentges and Judnick teams, and he will benefit from being part of the technical alliance that will have Tim Bender overseeing development of his race sleds. Team LaVallee Motorsports will have LaVallee running in Pro classes and Chris Kafka in the Semi-Pro classes.

Judnick Motorsports will be back at full strength this year with Ross Martin’s full recovery from a broken hip he suffered in a Winter X Games practice last winter. The past champion in the Pro Open class expects to be at full strength before the race season starts. Teammate Matt Judnick had a strong season last winter and is poised to rise in the Pro points races this year.
Scheuring Speed Sports has a new look with two new Pro racers, Robbie Malinoski and Andrew Johnstad. Malinoski is a past champion in both Pro classes and Johnstad is a second-year Pro two years removed from being Semi-Pro Racer of the Year, so the team is gunning for consistent podium finishes and points titles.
Dave Joanis of the Bourque’s Polaris Snocross Racing Team will compete on the entire ISOC schedule after finishing second in both Pro classes on the CSRA circuit (both national and regional) in Canada last winter. The Ontario-based team dominated the Canadian snocross circuit last season. In his six seasons of racing, the 17-year-old Joanis has won national titles in the Junior, Sport and Semi-Pro classes, so a Pro title is his next goal.
Danny Poirier of St. Johnsville, New York-based Hulten Speed Sports/JOJO Energy dominated the Rock Maple Racing (RMR) circuit last season, winning both Pro titles and winning every Pro Open final he ran in. He plans to run the RMR circuit and compete on the ISOC circuit, as will his new teammate, Bobby LePage, who finished third in ISOC’s Semi-Pro Open last winter.

Idaho-based Leighton Motorsports will expand its schedule this winter and all three racers – Semi-Pro Colby Crapo, Stephen Edwards in Sport classes and Trevor Leighton in Juniors – will run the entire ISOC schedule. They will also compete in Mountain West Racing (MWR) events as their schedule permits. Crapo swept both MWR Pro titles last winter while Edwards won both Semi-Pro classes.
A strong force on the Rock Maple Racing circuit will be Team Southside Racing. The team operates out of South Side Sales & Service in North Adams, Massachusetts, and team owners Cathy and Bruce Gaspardi, Sr., operate the Polaris Racing Support trailer that provides parts and assistance at race tracks.
Their team fields racers in virtually every class, from Juniors to Pros. The Star Performance team returns to racing after a brief hiatus. Jayme Cheney will manage the team and serve as crew chief. Derek Ellis and Kyle Fiebelkorn will compete on the ISOC circuit in the Semi-Pro classes while James Johnstad runs the Sport classes.
Two-time Women’s Super Stock points champion Kylie Abrahamson will resume her racing career as a privateer this winter. The former Avalanche Racing racer broke her wrist in last season’s second race, at Ironwood, Michigan, and she was out for the remainder of the season. Abrahamson won her national titles in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. Her father, Paul Abrahamson, will be her crew chief.

ICE OVALS
One of the top teams campaigning for Polaris on the ice ovals will be Team Wahl from Wahl Bros. Racing.
Dustin Wahl had a strong season on his Polaris-powered Wahl Bros. race sleds last winter, winning the Pro Champ title at the Beausejour opener and the Formula 1 Open and 600 Open classes at Eagle River. He also won six times in Champ 440.
Team Wahl racer Brandon Johnson also ran in the top Sprint classes and had one of his best weekends of the season at Wausau, where he ran second in 600 Open and Champ 440. On the WSA Pro Ice circuit, he finished second in Pro Formula points and was fourth in total Pro points.
The next generation of Team Wahl racers includes Jordan Wahl, who earned four wins in Jr. 1 380 Sprint and finished second in points in the Jr. 1 Sprint class on the WSA Pro Ice circuit.
Nick Van Strydonk, a rising oval star from Tomahawk, Wisconsin, won the WSA Pro Ice Pro Formula title last season and was third in Pro 440 Champ points. He finished second in overall Pro-class points last season. On the USSA circuit, he won the Pro Champ and Open 600 points titles.
Nick’s brother Beau Van Strydonk won the USSA Pro Sprint 600 title and tied for the Semi-Pro Sprint 600 championship. At Eagle River he won the Pro Sprint 600 and Junior III 600 Sprint championships.
USSA Semi-Pro Champion Joe Fjerstad was named the circuit’s Most Improved Oval Driver last winter. His season included a Semi Pro Champ 440 title at Eagle River.
John Henke was named USSA Oval Rookie of the Year and his family won the Family of the Year award, and Ryan Kniskern was the circuit’s Oval High Point Driver.
CROSS COUNTRY
Leading the charge for Polaris in Cross Country racing will be experienced Pro champions Gabe Bunke and Corey Davidson, both of whom will compete on the United States Cross Country (USCC) circuit.
Davidson finished last season fifth in Pro 600 points and fourth in Pro Open points, and he won the Vet 30+ title. Bunke finished second in Pro 600 points and fifth in Pro Open points. He also received the USCC Iron Man award at the 2009 awards banquet in recognition of his having raced in every USCC event – 43 consecutive races. Bunke’s amazing run has included three USCC class point titles and consistent top-five finishes, and he has done it while sometimes racing hurt.
Both Davidson and Bunke are expected to drive the Polaris 600 RUSH™ on the USCC circuit this coming winter.
Also expected to race on the 600 RUSH™ are several Polaris racers who will compete in the annual Iron Dog race across Alaska. The team of Polaris racers Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad won the grueling race last year, and they plan to compete again, this time on the breakthrough new 600 RUSH™.
Also scheduled to race the Iron Dog on the 600 RUSH™ are the teams of Shane Barber and Aaron Loyer, and Mike Morgan and Joe Folland. Registration for the Iron Dog is underway, and it’s expected that several more teams of Polaris racers will take part in this winter’s event.
Four Polaris race teams finished in the top 10 in the Iron Dog Pro class last February, the most of any manufacturer. The victory gave Polaris its 11th win in 25 Iron Dog races, also the most of any brand. Also finishing in the top 10 aboard Polaris sleds were the teams of: Mike Morgan and Tyler Huntington; Shane Barber and Stevan White; and Chris Olds and Matthew Spernak.
HILLCLIMB
Rager said he expects the Polaris hillclimb effort out West to be very successful again this winter. Among the top competitors he’ll have back on Polaris sleds will be the highly successful Keith Curtis.
Two seasons ago, Curtis won three Stock titles and Stock King of the Hill honors at the Jackson Hole World Championship Snowmobile Hillclimb – and then he became the King of Kings by outperforming his fellow Kings of the Hill. At last winter’s Jackson Hole event, Curtis won the Stock 800 and Stock 1000 titles and took second in Improved Stock 800.
The Polaris hillclimbers will dedicate the season to their mentor, Rick Ward, the legendary competitor and long-time manager of the Polaris hillclimb program. Rick died following a motorcycle accident in September, and his absence will be felt by hillclimbers on every brand of sled this winter and going forward
Rick was an 18-time World Champion who earned numerous King of the Hill honors throughout his career – a career spent exclusively on Polaris snowmobiles. He was also an inspiration and mentor. He taughtyoung riders the right way to prep their sleds and tutored them on riding technique. He also led by example with his generosity in lending his expertise and his gracious manner, win or lose.
