Murdochville: In the land of the white gold!

Murdochville is a small town in Gaspésie where a copper mine was once in operation.  After its closing in 2002, many residents left their town as they did not have any job.  In order to reflate the economy, Murdochville counts on diversity, more particularly on windmill-farms and tourism.

However today residents have discovered another vein, an imperishable one this time.  This is the White Gold.  In this article, I will make you discover this new destination that offers fabulous opportunities to snowmobilers!

Whether you are trail, off-trail or mountain snowmobile enthusiasts, the wide territory of Murdochville will fulfill the most demanding snowmobilers!  Surrounded by tremendous forests and mountains as far as the eye can see, there are many logging roads that give access to hundreds of square miles of land that are just waiting to be explored.

The trail snowmobile fans can reach Murdochville from north and south-east via trail # 597 and from south-west via a local trail maintained by the chamber of commerce of the town.  This 85 km trail allows the snowmobilers to get to the heart of the peninsula and particularly to the La Cache lodge located on regional trail # 595.

From Murdochville, many loops and back-and-forth rides are possible.  The Club Étoile des Monts maintains the trails in perfect conditions.  As they mostly follow logging roads, trails are wide and safe.  One of the things that impressed me the most is the outstanding scenery that the trails let us discover.  We discover the whole territory vastness of this region.

Off-trail fans are up for a treat.  Indeed, all the territory surrounding Murdochville is made of public lands.  So it is possible to ride in this wide network of roads and timberlands without any problem.  They have access to many hundreds of miles of small snowy roads offering to these snowmobilers hours and hours of fun!

The snowmobilers who prefer to explore steeper sites can use the power lines layout and the numerous timberlands on the mountains all around Murdochville.  Even if the altitude difference is not the same than in the Canadian Rockies, they are still an astonishing challenge for the mountain snowmobilers.  It is no surprise that some people have nicknamed this territory «The mini-Rockies-of-the-East».

Now that we have a good idea about the territory offered by Murdochville and its surroundings, let us notice that the season begins in early December to close at mid-April.  The local snowmobilers say that they can ride till the beginning of May in some portions of this paradise.

In my opinion, what makes Murdochville such a perfect destination for snowmobilers is the versatility and diversity of the territory.  It is possible to stay many days at the same place and to live a totally different adventure each day.

In conclusion, I must emphasize the outstanding reception of Murdochville residents.  Last February, the Motoneiges.ca Team has been warmly hosted by people who care for their city development and who do all they can to offer an unforgettable experience to the snowmobilers!

For my riding companions and for me, Murdochville is now an annual destination that we consider essential during our snowmobile season.
