We just rode our first 1000 kilometers on the Switchback Assault 800 equipped with the 15 X 1,352 X 144 in. Cobra track and it is already time to present our first impressions. As indicated in the title, our first impressions are not reflecting a precise analysis of the snowmobile but rather our feelings right at the first kilometers. We have not used our machine in all possible conditions yet, but they were just great thanks to the cold weather of the last few days.
Our first comment when we ride the first kilometers on this Assault and absorb bumps, is about the obvious difference with the first generation of Assault models. When it has been launched, this snowmobile offered the image of a robust vehicle made for the toughest riders. It was and still is right when you look at different components, such as the front and rear Walker Evans shocks. However, the rear suspension of the first years was so rigid that most of the snowmobilers who tried it could not imagine riding for long hours on the machine.

Once again, Polaris’ engineers listened to our comments of the last years and now offer the Assault with an adjustment range that is much more accessible to most of the snowmobilers. The rear springs seem much smoother than in the old days; this provides more comfort and allows the use of the various adjustments of the piggyback shock. However, the following questions need an answer : What is going to happen if we use the snowmobile in extreme conditions ? Will comfort reduce the robustness of the Assault ? I will check this out carefully during my next rides.
The new Pro-Steer skis have highly improved the riding of all the Switchback models, including the Assault. The new keel reduces darting and the ski shape seems to highly reduce ski-lift in sharp bends, as we experienced in the past. In fact, we must go along with some understeering with these new skis combined with a 144 in. track. Even with such a track, the Assault remains easy to handle on trails all while having a very good traction during acceleration. The front suspension capability is still very impressive and allows us to keep control of the machine in any condition. Also, I really like the riding position combined with the ProTaper handlebar with 110 ° J hooks. The seat height also allows the rider to easily switch from seated to standing, which is an advantage for such a vehicle and mostly for taller pilots.
As we just ended the break-in period, we cannot completely review the performance aspect yet. But already, we can feel that the longer track is not a problem for the 800 Cleanfire engine, on the contrary. I am especially pleased with the lighter drivetrain of the engine combined with the proven P85-TEAM LWT clutch system and with the Cobra track. Power is not useful if we do not have the right traction… which the Assault obviously delivers on trails. I can’t wait to run other types of performance tests and in powder snow.
Overall, I am particularly impressed by the comfort of this snowmobile, despite what its category announces. The strenght of the chassis and components does not affect the comfort anymore, as it did in the past. The versatility of the Assault pleases me a lot and I can’t wait to test it in deep snow. Even if this crossover machine is equipped with a 144 in. track, the obligatory compromise is not a major obstacle to handiness and performance on trails. So, I welcome the new year with much enthusiasm and I wish for abundant snowfalls that will allow me to experience the full capability of my sled.
