Final review of the Yamaha SRViper S-TX DX

During the last years, the crossover snowmobile category has known a significant development. There are more models than ever in the different manufacturers’ lineups.

These ones offer packages meant to fulfill the needs and desires of the largest number of snowmobilers possible. Yamaha is no exception to this tendancy. For example, in 2015, the Japanese manufacturer introduced many new models, like the SRViper S-TX DX, and this is the model I had the opportunity to test all along the 2015 season.

When you take a close look at the features of the SRViper S-TX DX, it becomes obvious that it has been designed to meet the needs of trail snowmobilers as well as the needs of snowmobilers who like to have fun on wide open snowy areas.

Personally, I am first of all a trail snowmobiler. However, I like to ride off trails, mostly at the beginning and at the end of a season. It is in this context that I tested the Viper S-TX.

Yamaha SRViper S-TX DX

Motorization

Like all models of the SRViper lineup, the S-TX DX is equipped with the triple 4-stroke Genesis engine of 1149 cc. It is renowned in the industry for its high performance and reliability. There is only one inconvenience and it can be noticed only when riding off trail. Effectively, the use of the 4-stroke technology brings an additional weight compared with the 2-stroke engines. However, the other characteristics of the triple engine more than make up for that, in order to make us enjoy each moment we spend piloting the SRViper S-TX DX.

The Yamaha pulleys are used to transfer the power of this engine to the track. They are renowned in the industry for their flexibility and reliability. They provide very good performances and the service life of the belts is very impressive.

Track

It seems like the 2015 SRViper S-TX DX has been designed for the Québec market. I have been able to notice it by myself on the terrain all season long. Effectively, the tunnel of 141 in/358,1 cm and the Cobra track of 1,352 in/3,434 cm allowed me to really enjoy off-trail riding. I had a good flotation on snow and an efficient traction. I have been surprised how easy it is to go backwards without getting stuck. In brief, even without riding a “20 in/50,8cm” or a mountain snowmobile, we can have lots of fun off trail.

Comfort

This SRViper is equipped with a windshield that is tall enough to offer a good protection against wind and snow to the pilot. The hand and thumb warmers are very efficient, but with only two heat levels, we must often switch from one to the other to get the maximum comfort. Also, the heated seat is a very interesting feature. I used it regularly to keep me warm in the extreme cold temperatures we had last season.

Storage

The 2015 SRViper S-TX DX does not offer any trunk or storage bag. Then, the tubular tunnel rack has been very useful on many occasions. I regularly used it to secure a storage bag or a jerry can. Really very useful !

To conclude, I think that the 2015 SRViper S-TX DX is a snowmobile that is very well adapted to the Québec market, to our tough winter conditions and our large territory. If you are a snowmobiler who likes to discover idyllic backcountry or else, a snowmobiler who likes long rides on trails, I recommend this snowmobile.

I would like to thank Yamaha Canada and P. Labonté & Fils, Yamaha dealer in Mont-Joli, for making possible this long-term trial of the 2015 SRViper S-TX DX.
