ToggleWith the winter of 2024 shaping up more like a trail-riding season, I wanted to go back to a snowmobile outfit that would withstand the extreme cold. Over the years, I have had the privilege of testing various clothing items. However, I often made compromises in terms of warmth. I also wanted to be able to go off trail. So, I took a moment to explore the CKX range and chose what seemed to meet my new goals. Naturally, there were several options available to me through the Drummondville manufacturer’s collection. This made my research a bit more challenging, but still just as interesting.
Kelton Jacket by CKX
Right off the bat, I was drawn to the look and colour of the Kelton jacket. It reminded me of the parka-style jackets from the time of the Harricana Raid. The design and style are very well done, as is the flexible material. This adds comfort for the rider in their movements. On the trail, I quickly realized that I had not made a mistake.
The CKX Kelton jacket is lightweight, but the level of insulation is very effective in colder conditions. The flexible material also prevents it from becoming stiffer in cold weather. It maintains the feeling of ease and comfort that characterizes it. Despite the thickness of the insulation, its cut maintains a nice look both while standing and sitting. Several practical storage pockets equip the jacket both inside and outside. I am not a big fan of the hood at the back, but it must be admitted that it complements the garment’s style well.
CKX Element Pants
After choosing my jacket, I noticed that CKX did not offer bibs or pants in the same model. So, I had to choose black pants to match my outfit. I can’t help but think that a matching pair of pants could have really made a statement. My choice fell on the CKX Element pants. Once again, I really liked the flexibility of the overalls. They provide exceptional comfort when seated. The design is well thought out, giving them a nice look. However, I quickly noticed that the lining thickness was not the same as my jacket. This model is less warm than my jacket. In very cold weather, you can feel the chill through the garment. Again, the flexibility of the material is a definite advantage. Ideally, I would choose the exact same pants model, but with a higher warmth rating to match that of the jacket.
CKX Kaelan Gloves
When I ride a snowmobile, I always like to have gloves that provide me with some flexibility to easily manipulate the various controls. While some leather gloves can be more rigid, the Kaelan gloves are an exception to the rule. They are very supple. The combination of carefully arranged leather and nylon makes them very comfortable. The seams and the quality of the materials used seem to indicate good durability. Its inner lining, made of polyester velvet, is very comfortable and provides good warmth when starting the day. However, it retains some moisture in the long term, which can become an issue on long rides. During your stops, make sure to place them where they can dry during your break.
CKX Muk Lite Evolution Boots
As soon as I held the CKX Muk Lite boots in my hands, I was impressed by their lightness. They are also very comfortable. I felt as if I had slippers on my feet because of their lightness. The removable insulating lining is a significant advantage for me. After a long day of riding, it’s always easier to dry the lining when removed from the boot. The CKX Muk Lite boot is very warm due to its insulation and design. However, a compromise was made on the structure of the boot to achieve such lightness. It is softer and offers little ankle support. This is not an issue on the trail, but it is not suitable for off-trail riding.
CKX Mission Full-Face Helmet
My biggest surprise in terms of accessories this season is undoubtedly the CKX Mission full-face helmet. Opting for the carbon fibre version for its weight, I was truly won over by the functionality of this helmet. Several important details make it functional and very comfortable for riding. The insulation membrane at the neck is equipped with Velcro that can be closed after putting on the helmet. This allows for a very snug fit around the neck, preventing air infiltration.
The visor opening system is easy to use, even with gloves. Additionally, it is convenient as it fully clears the face for trail stops. When closed, the flexible rubber insulation system adjusts to the rider’s face above the nose. Additional adjustments can also be made to ensure that fog does not rise towards the visor.
Thanks to this large visor, the side vision is excellent and prevents a feeling of confinement in the helmet. A tinted visor can also be used inside to avoid being dazzled by the sun. Ultimately, the ventilation system is truly effective. It creates airflow that removes vapour, thereby avoiding fogging episodes on the visor.
Conclusion
I had not tested CKX clothing and accessories for several years. I must say that the overall quality of the products from the Quebec manufacturer greatly impressed me. CKX clothing still represents good value for money in their product offering. I do notice, however, that the people from Drummondville have increased the overall quality of several elements. Many refinements have been made, positioning the brand very advantageously in today’s market. I really enjoyed this test, which allowed me to reconnect with the Quebec manufacturer. I must give my favourites to the Kelton jacket and the CKX Mission full-face helmet. The latter is clearly one of the best trail helmets I have had the chance to try in over 20 years.
