Reconditioned exhaust system
A snowmobile can appear to be in good condition if you only look at the cabin and seat. However, restoration work does not stop at the exterior aesthetics alone. One of the main components, which jumps out at you when you open the cabin, is, of course, the exhaust system. Giving it a fresh coat of paint will not only give it back its original look but will also slow down the rusting process that will eventually pierce the exhaust pipe and generate an unwanted rumble.
To do a good job, it is advisable to completely remove all rust and paint and start anew on the metal. In my case, I used a steel brush mounted on an electric drill: nothing complicated, just a little physical work. Be sure to wear a safety mask and safety glasses.
On this system, I used a high-temperature matte spray paint and then applied a high-temperature clear. I applied three coats of matte black in small coats to make sure I covered everything well and then about an hour later, I applied a coat of clear to make everything shiny. At this stage, it is advisable to let the paint dry a little before putting everything back in place. Afterward, I ran the engine to set the paint in place, which will allow the paint to dry and harden properly. It takes a good half day to remove the system, sand and paint it. This type of paint will never be as durable as the original finish, so with regular use, it will need to be redone every 4 to 5 years.
