ToggleNot to “count our chickens before they hatch”, but all signs suggest that most regions in Quebec will enjoy a white Christmas this year—a stark contrast to the last few years. Could this mean an early start to the snowmobile season? Let’s take a closer look.
First Storm of the Season on the Horizon
As I am writing this, weather forecasts predict the first major winter storm will sweep through Quebec from Wednesday to Friday, with possible precipitation continuing into the weekend.
While it’s wise to take such forecasts with a grain of salt, many regions are expected to receive between 15 cm and 20 cm of snow in total. This will add to the thin blanket already covering the ground. With colder nights ahead, the ground will soon freeze. In just a few days, we could officially transition into snowmobiling season.
Trail Preparation
All signs point to favourable conditions for clubs to begin prepping the trail base. However, this doesn’t mean the trails will open immediately. Trail base preparation is a critical step for getting trails ready for further snowfalls, which may allow for openings in certain areas over the coming weeks.
Let me be clear—riders must wait for the official announcement of trail openings before venturing out. Club volunteers determine when trails are safe and meet all conditions for snowmobile traffic. A groomer passing through the trails is not an indicator that they are open.
Possible Trail Openings Before New Year’s?
It’s looking like some clubs might be able to announce trail openings before the end of December. All the right conditions seem to be aligning. This would mark the first time in a few years that trails open so early.
If this happens, many snowmobilers could kick off their season before New Year’s—a fantastic way to maximize the holiday season. No doubt, enthusiasts will share tales of their early rides at family gatherings.
Presale Period for Trail Permits
For those waiting for a sign from above to decide when to purchase their 2025 trail permits, this storm could be it.
Some cautious riders have been holding off until the start of the season—or at least winter—before committing to a permit. This early storm and current conditions provide confidence for those looking to take advantage of the presale period, which ends on December 9.
Are You Ready?
With this beautiful scenario on the horizon, now might be the perfect time to visit your local dealer to take advantage of great holiday promotions. Many exciting discounts are available for enthusiasts who want to treat themselves for Christmas!
While you’re at it, consider replacing any worn-out gear, like boots, gloves, or helmets that have seen better days. It’s also the perfect time to stock up on gifts for the snowmobile lovers in your life.
Enjoy this magical white Christmas. Maybe we’ll cross paths on the trails before the New Year!
