With trails running through New York from Pennsylvania to Canada, snowmobiling is one way to explore the state’s scenery.
On Saturday February 2, in Pitcher, the Chenango County Snowmobile Federation hosted an event called ‘Snow Blast.’
The event brought together local vendors and riders looking to promote the winter sport.
"In the wintertime up here in upstate New York, you have to do something for fun and exercise," said Judi Whittaker, Snow Blast organizer.
"You get out and see the great outdoors, you’re going on the trails and you see places you wouldn’t see when you’re going down the highway."
While there wasn’t enough snow to go on the courses on Saturday, Snow Blast had raffles, a variety of venders and snowmobiling clubs talking about local courses. "You come to an event like the Snow Blast and you say, ‘Hey, I’m part of a larger community.’ We believe this activity is important and activity adds to the quality of life in Chenango County and Central New York," said Steve Craig, President and CEO of Commerce Chenango.
Vendors said the top items snowmobile buyers are looking for are a specific steering bar height, a comfortable seat and good suspension.
"(Snowmobiles) are all fast," said Tony Gentile of SSR Powersports. "Right now, it’s all about comfort," he said. "They all perform well and handle well."
The Chenango Sheriff’s Office said they stress safety, following the rules and not driving under the influence of alcohol.
All proceeds from Saturday’s event went to the Pink Ribbon Riders.
The snowmobiling group raises money to help local breast cancer patients.
