ToggleDid you know that a significant percentage of snowmobilers mistakenly believe that the same insurance coverage applies to both cars and recreational vehicles? In fact, there are several important differences. It’s essential for all enthusiasts to understand these distinctions and ensure they have the appropriate coverage.
Civil Liability Insurance
At first glance, your snowmobile must be insured in the same way as your car. You are required to purchase a standard Quebec insurance policy (FPQ No. 1). To operate your snowmobile in Quebec, it is mandatory to have a civil liability insurance policy with a minimum coverage of $1,000,000. Since January 2021, this minimum has increased from $500,000 to $1,000,000. This insurance protects you against any property damage or bodily injury you may cause to third parties while using your vehicle, which is not covered under the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) insurance plan. You could be held responsible for compensating others if you are found at fault for causing bodily harm.
In addition to the mandatory civil liability insurance, you can add coverage for theft, fire, and vandalism. You can also insure yourself against damages caused by collisions or other types of accidents. If desired, you can increase your civil liability coverage to $2,000,000.
For snowmobilers who purchase a trail access pass from a club affiliated with the FCMQ, civil liability insurance is included at the time of purchase. However, this policy can be cancelled if you already have coverage.
Beware of Restrictions!
In Quebec, the minimum age to operate an off-road vehicle, including snowmobiles, is 16, provided the operator holds a valid driver’s licence or a certificate of competency issued by the SAAQ. In the event of an incident involving a driver who does not meet these requirements, insurers may, in certain cases, refuse to pay any compensation.
What About Bodily Injury?
Contrary to what many snowmobilers assume, the SAAQ will not provide compensation for injuries or fatalities resulting from a snowmobile or off-road vehicle accident, except in cases where there is a collision with a moving vehicle not excluded under Quebec’s automobile insurance plan (e.g., a snowmobile colliding with a car).
To ensure optimal protection, you can purchase personal insurance coverage (endorsement) FAQ No. 34 through your auto insurer.

FAQ No. 34 Covers:
- The insured person named in the contract at 100%.
- The spouse of the named insured and any dependent children in cases of death, dismemberment, or total disability, as well as medical expenses. Coverage percentages may vary depending on the situation—review the endorsement for details. Note that compensation amounts are subject to certain limitations, so consult your insurer or broker for clarification.
It is strongly recommended that you obtain appropriate insurance from your auto insurer or a private insurance company to protect against the possibility of your snowmobile causing injury to others or yourself.
