Polaris ProStar S4 INDY Adventure: When Riding Pleasure Matters More Than the Numbers

Polaris Indy Adventure S-4 Prostar

That’s it—the ice is broken. I’m finally sharing my first impressions of a snowmobile that genuinely surprised me across the board. From the moment I took the handlebars of the Polaris ProStar S4 INDY Adventure, I was pleasantly impressed. The first thing that caught my attention was its 998 cc four-stroke twin-cylinder engine. But where the INDY truly stands out is its stability. I found it predictable and reassuring, and its well-tuned suspension does an excellent job of absorbing trail imperfections. This snowmobile inspires confidence from the very first miles and behaves exactly like a true INDY should. But does riding enjoyment really go beyond what the engine numbers suggest? Read on to find out.

What I Liked About the ProStar S4 INDY Adventure

First, the ProStar S4 INDY Adventure offers an excellent riding position, outstanding handling, and a very effective suspension. It really shines on hard-packed trails and in changing conditions. Its ride quality is exceptionally smooth, and the engine delivers power seamlessly at any rpm. Finally, the navigation system has proved to be truly indispensable.

Areas for Improvement on the ProStar S4 INDY Adventure

Those who follow my reviews already know this—I mention it every time. The mirrors positioned near knee level are far from ideal. You have to take your eyes off the trail to use them. Another issue is noticeable ski darting. Once again, this is something I address every season, and I usually solve it by switching to carbide runners equipped with a trail-deflecting wear bar at the front.

Trail Behaviour of the INDY Adventure

No, this isn’t the most powerful INDY on the market. But it is genuinely fun to ride—and it surprised me. This well-balanced snowmobile focuses on comfort and riding enjoyment. It’s the kind of machine that builds confidence right away and ends up putting a smile on your face before you even realize it. Light and easy to maneuver through corners, it maintains consistent behaviour even when trail conditions change.

ProStar S4 Engine (998 cc): Riding Enjoyment Before Raw Power

This is where I answer the big question.

The naturally aspirated four-stroke ProStar S4 engine displaces 998 cc and produces around 95 horsepower. It doesn’t aim to compete with high-performance machines, but it delivers more than enough power for demanding situations. On the trail, though, it tells a different story. I found it lively and enjoyable, especially when riding in Sport mode. Three engine modes are available: Eco, Standard, and Sport.

Despite its modest output on paper, I had an absolute blast riding it. The engine runs very quietly, even at higher rpm. So, does riding pleasure outweigh the engine’s published figures?

My answer is yes. While I do hope we’ll see a turbocharged version of this engine in 2027, it already has a lot to offer. I did expect slightly better fuel efficiency, though. I’ll be digging deeper into that over the course of the season, as my data is still too preliminary.

Polaris RIDE COMMAND: A Benchmark Navigation System for Trail Riding

I talk about it often, but I genuinely appreciate Polaris’s RIDE COMMAND system. It’s so complete and practical that it’s hard to do without. Acting as a full onboard computer, it offers a wide range of essential features.

The 7-inch touchscreen allows you to customize the layout of your instruments—fuel gauge, temperature, and more—exactly where you want them. Bluetooth connectivity lets you pair your smartphone or a SENA-style communication system. There’s also a diagnostic section that includes maintenance alerts, such as oil-change reminders.

Heated grip and thumb warmer settings can be adjusted independently, giving you full control over comfort. For example, you can set the grips to 50 °C and the thumb warmer to 55 °C.

The GPS module with trail maps helps you navigate in real time throughout your ride, which is especially useful when trails aren’t quite where you’re used to seeing them.

Group ride planning is another standout feature. It allows you to track fellow riders, while also letting loved ones follow your progress remotely using the free mobile app. This adds an important safety element, especially for solo outings.

Finally, RIDE COMMAND updates can be completed easily using a simple USB key via the official update system.
