Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 2026: First Trail Impressions With the RAS RX Suspension

Renegade X-RS 2026 : la révolution RAS-RX

The Renegade X-RS 2026 marks an important turning point for Ski-Doo with the introduction of the RAS RX front suspension. This new setup promises increased precision and improved stability, even on rough trails. In this article, I share my first impressions of my long-term test snowmobile, focusing primarily on its new front suspension.

Overview of the New RAS RX Front Suspension

Ski-Doo first introduced the RAS RX suspension on its 2025 MXZ and Backcountry models. This year, it finally makes its way onto the Renegade X-RS 2026. After reading extensively about this new front suspension, I am convinced it will have a major impact on cornering stability.

I therefore invite you to join me on my first trail ride to see whether this assumption holds true. When I wrote my preseason ownership article, I clearly outlined my expectations for the Renegade X-RS 2026. You can read them by clicking here.

Selecting the Terrain for This First Trail Test of the Renegade X-RS 2026

A Demanding Environment to Evaluate Stability

For this test, I needed to choose an area with plenty of corners and varied terrain. This allows me to push my Renegade X-RS into a wide range of real-world situations and deliver an accurate, honest evaluation. My goal is also to provide useful information to help guide you in the potential purchase of your next snowmobile.

Location and Test Conditions

I ultimately selected the Hautes-Laurentides region, north of Mont-Laurier, in outfitter territory. Over two days, I rode my Renegade X-RS on a hard-packed trail base, with temperatures hovering around -35 °C (-31 °F).

First Impressions of the Renegade X-RS 2026: A Remarkable Debut

On the first day, roughly 30% of the trails featured irregularities. However, these conditions remained within what I would consider normal and acceptable limits. Typically, I need one to two full days to truly get comfortable on a new snowmobile. With the Renegade X-RS 2026, I reached an optimal level of control after just ten minutes. It felt as though my nine-month riding hiatus had no impact on my riding abilities.

Adjustable Ride Thanks to Engine Modes and Smart-Shox

The Renegade X-RS 2026 stands out for its adjustable riding character, made possible by three engine modes and a semi-active suspension system. While the 900 ACE Turbo R engine offers three ride modes, the Smart-Shox suspension provides three adjustment settings. On my first ride, I selected the Normal engine mode paired with the Comfort shock setting. This combination immediately made me feel at ease on the snowmobile. The learning curve was minimal, and I appreciated how easy and confidence-inspiring the ride felt from the first few miles.

Handling in Bumps and Corners With the RAS RX Suspension

The REV Gen5 chassis of the Renegade X-RS 2026 works extremely well with the RAS RX and Smart-Shox suspension systems. Let me illustrate why with a concrete example.

When entering a corner, a snowmobile naturally tends to push toward the outside. Under normal circumstances, the rider must shift body weight significantly to maintain the intended line. With the new RAS RX suspension, the need for weight transfer is reduced by roughly 70% to achieve the same result. This substantial reduction allows the rider to conserve energy, which directly translates into less fatigue at the end of the day.

On rough trails, Smart-Shox truly shines. It proved especially effective over typical trail bumps. Thanks to its real-time adjustment system, the suspension absorbs irregularities so effectively that they almost seem to disappear, delivering a comfortable ride without any noticeable loss of speed.

Rider Ergonomics and REV Gen5 Chassis

From an ergonomic standpoint, the Renegade X-RS 2026 also delivers. The riding position offered by the REV Gen5 chassis allows for optimal control of the snowmobile. I can easily access onboard accessories and fully benefit from the visibility provided by the touchscreen display.

900 ACE Turbo R Engine: Performance and Consistency

The 900 ACE Turbo R engine is no stranger to strong performance. However, when paired with the RAS RX and the Smart-Shox, it forms a package that is both powerful and extremely enjoyable to ride.

Initial Observations From the Renegade X-RS 2026 Test

After just my first two rides, the Renegade X-RS 2026 impressed me with the overall balance of its components. It is clear that Ski-Doo’s engineers were targeting trail riders with this model. That said, these impressions remain preliminary.

Over the coming weeks, I have planned a series of more in-depth trail tests to evaluate different aspects of the snowmobile. Once my season is complete, I will share my final test report. At that point, I will be able to determine whether the Renegade X-RS truly stands out as a benchmark trail snowmobile.

Acknowledgements

To conclude, I would like to thank Équipements Maniwaki for providing this snowmobile for my test program. I would also like to extend my thanks to Mr. Daniel Blanchette, owner of Xplor Trailers in Bécancour, for kindly lending me a trailer to facilitate my travels throughout the test season.

Have a great season, and always keep right while riding the trails!
