Pre-ride analysis, Switchback Assault 144 2017

In March 2014, Polaris Industries introduced the brand new AXYS platform for their 2015 Rush and Switchback models. The year after, a “ mountain ” edition was offered for the 2016 RMK, PRO-RMK and SKS models. An important Polaris model had not been “ migrated ” to the new platform. Polaris corrected the situation this year with the introduction of the new Switchback Assault 144 on the AXYS platform.

Everyone agrees about the impressive features of the new AXYS chassis and the major improvement it brings to the riding experience of Polaris snowmobiles. So, we were very happy that the 2017 Switchback Assault 144 was built on this new chassis.

During the 2017 snowmobile season, Team Motoneiges.ca/SledMagazine.com will be happy to test this model and to present our observations and comments. Now, let’s take a look at the features of this snowmobile.

AXYS chassis

The chassis of the Switchback Assault is a specific adaptation of the AXYS platform that offers much lightness without compromising on strength. According to the manufacturer, its design provides optimal riding position for a good balance on the snowmobile, thus making easier the maneuvers on trail and in deep snow.

During our tests, we are going to pilot the Switchback Assault in a wide variety of conditions on trail and off trail. This will let us know if the performances of the snowmobile meet our expectations.

IGX 144 rear suspension
One of the components of this snowmobile that is too often unnoticed is the new IGX 144 rear suspension. According to Polaris, this uncoupled suspension offers the balance and agility of the RMK in off-trail riding and a highly improved riding on trail.

Choice between the Cobra track of 1.35 in/3,43 cm or the Series 4 track of 2.0 in/5,08 cm
Within this test, we chose the Cobra track of 1.35 in/3,43 cm. It offers a good compromise for riding on groomed trails and off trail.

Front suspension
At front, we have the Walker Evans needle shocks with reservoirs. They offer compression adjusters.

PRO-STEER skis
Again at front, the Switchback Assault is equipped with PRO-STEER skis. The keel has been redesigned and the skag has been shortened for reduced steering effort. The ski rib is more pronounced in order to offer larger surface of traction in deeper snow.

PowderTrac hybrid running boards
Polaris introduces on the Switchback Assault brand new running boards for improved snow clean out. Even with 56 % open space, according to Polaris, these running boards are very robust. Also, their wider and fatter front design provides more comfort while sitting or standing up.

800 Cleanfire H.O. engine
Developed at the same time than the AXYS platform, the 800 Cleanfire H.O. engine offers impressive performances. Also, the integrated mounting position offers optimal balance of the machine. Many improvements over the previous edition of this engine explain its superior performances. Here are the main improvements :

3-stage electronically-controled exhaust valves

These valves offer quicker and more precise response during changes of engine speed. Thus, the engine reacts more rapidly when the pilot presses the throttle. Also, Polaris says that combustion is more efficient, which would reduce fuel consumption. If our observations confirm this, then we would get the best of both worlds.

Electronic oil pump

The use of an electronic oil pump is trendy in the 2-stroke engine world. It allows a more precise oil delivery necessary for the engine speed, the required charge, … In theory, performances are then better and oil consumption is reduced.

Lightweight crankshaft

The use of a lighter crankshaft reduces its inertia, thus improving the engine response to changes of speed. We get stronger and more precise accelerations.

Other improvements of the engine

Furthermore, the intake and the exhaust system have been improved for better air and exhaust gas flow. Combined with the use of Vforce reeds, the engine performances are then improved. Finally, the use of new grooved pistons specially designed for this engine, should help to extend the engine lifetime.

New side panels and hood

Polaris brought special attention during the design of the new panels offered with the AXYS chassis. Effectively, their adjustment and finish are much better than the previous ones. They are then easier to open, to remove and to put back in place. Gaps between panels and other components are minimized and more stylish.

During the design of these panels, protection against wind and bad weather has also been taken into consideration. We will be able to check this out during our rides next winter.

AXYS Performance seat

The seat of the Switchback Assault 144 is narrower in front to facilitate the changes of the pilot position in turns. The top material is gripper to keep the pilot in place. Also, the seat is lighter.

AXYS Standard underseat bag

This snowmobile offers a large storage space of 1024 in3 / 16 780 cm3 underneath the back of the seat. Weather-tight design seals out snow, says the manufacturer.

Digital gauge

The gauge package of the Switchback Assault is very complete. It offers a wide range of data. It is made of a LCD screen with a display zone that is 25 % larger. Also, a GPS is included on the model we are going to ride.

Main control block

The main control block is located on the left side of the handlebar. It is very well designed. The position of the various controls is natural and we get used to it quickly.

LED lights

All models built on the AXYS platform are equipped with standard LED headlights that offer much better lighting than usual lights. Light is brighter and their lifetime is almost unlimited. We are very happy to have this type of lights for our test.

Let the season begin!

This summarizes the main features of the 2017 Switchback Assault 144. We can’t wait to hit the trails and deep snow areas in order to observe the performances of this snowmobile. Follow our articles all season long. Now, it is time to get ready and to start our season!
