Full Review of the Polaris Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash 155: a Powerful, Agile Mountain Snowmobile… But Demanding

For the second year in a row, Polaris gave me the opportunity to test a mountain snowmobile. This time, I rode the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos 155. Designed for thrill seekers, this machine stands out for its deep snow performance and enhanced agility. This review offers an overview of the sled’s features. It highlights four major strengths and also outlines three areas that could be improved.

Features of the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos 155

1. Engine and Performance

At the heart of this machine is the Patriot 9R engine. This 899 cc twin-cylinder engine is specifically designed for mountain use. Unlike the Patriot 850, the 9R delivers more torque at low RPMs. This makes technical manoeuvres and quick accelerations easier. With a lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, the moving mass is reduced, resulting in improved throttle response and sharper acceleration.

2. Matryx Slash Chassis

The Matryx Slash chassis is designed to maximize agility in rugged terrain. With a shortened tunnel and more compact design, this structure allows for better weight distribution and increased manoeuvrability. In hilly terrain or deep snow, the design improves weight transfer and climbing ability.

3. Rear Suspension

One of the key strengths of the Patriot 9R RMK Khaos 155 is its Walker Evans Velocity rear suspension system. This setup enhances stability, absorbs bumps, and boosts control in rough terrain. It delivers superior shock absorption and increased responsiveness on uneven surfaces. With optimized travel, handling is improved whether going uphill, downhill, or during sidehilling.

4. Track and Suspension

One of this model’s defining features is its 155 x 3.25-inch Series 9 track. It provides outstanding grip in deep snow, maximizing traction and improving flotation in rough terrain. The design offers a perfect balance between flotation and aggressiveness, helping to maintain control even in the most demanding conditions.

5. Weight and Ergonomics

Thanks to its reduced weight compared to other RMK models, the 9R RMK Khaos is easier to handle. This is especially useful for off-trail enthusiasts who want an agile sled that’s easier to right if it tips over.

6. Technology and Instrumentation

The Polaris RMK Khaos 155 9R isn’t just a power machine—it’s also equipped with advanced technology to enhance the rider experience. The 7-inch display is powered by RIDE COMMAND.

  • A 7-inch screen displays essential snowmobile information such as speed, RPM, and temperature.
  • A more advanced interface includes integrated GPS and Bluetooth connectivity. It also features Ride Command, enabling real-time sharing of navigation and ride data.

Strengths

1. 9R Engine Responsiveness

The 9R engine is undoubtedly one of the sled’s main assets. It delivers excellent torque at low RPMs, allowing for quick throttle response and precision in technical manoeuvres. Compared to other engines, the 9R stands out for its agility and responsiveness. This makes for a more dynamic and engaging ride.

2. Outstanding Manoeuvrability

Thanks to the Matryx Slash chassis and Khaos suspension, my sled delivers exceptional manoeuvrability. Tight turns, quick directional changes, and control on steep slopes are all made easier. This lets riders have fun and tackle difficult terrain without excessive effort.

3. Lightweight for Better Agility

The weight reduction compared to previous models plays a key role in the ride experience. A lighter sled means less effort in deep snow. This is a major benefit for long off-trail rides, where fatigue can become a limiting factor.

4. Standard Adjustable Ski Stance for Optimal Adaptability

The Polaris Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash features an adjustable ski stance from 36 to 38 inches, offering riders great flexibility:

  • A narrower stance (36 in.) provides increased agility, making sidehilling easier. This allows for better handling in tight, technical terrain.
  • A wider stance (38 in.) improves stability, especially at higher speeds and in more open areas. This inspires greater confidence on less technical trails.

Weaknesses

1. Snow Accumulation Under the Drive Belt

One ongoing issue is snow buildup in the engine compartment under the drive belt. Over time, this creates an ice layer that can damage the belt.

2. Requires Solid Riding Technique

Although this sled is designed to be responsive and agile, it can be demanding for less experienced riders. The lightweight design and powerful 9R engine require solid riding skills. This is especially important to avoid poor weight transfer, which can make deep-snow riding more challenging.

3. Limited Fuel Tank Range

With increased performance comes relatively high fuel consumption. The fuel tank may feel limited for long backcountry rides. Riders planning extended explorations will need to carry extra fuel, which can be inconvenient.

Conclusion

The Polaris RMK Khaos 155 9R stands out as a top choice for backcountry enthusiasts. It’s ideal for those seeking a sled that’s powerful, agile, and dynamic. Thanks to its 9R engine, Matryx Slash chassis, and advanced suspension system, it delivers an exhilarating ride. This sled excels in rough terrain. However, its high price point, demanding handling, and fuel autonomy should be considered before purchase.

All in all, the 9R is aimed at experienced riders who want a machine capable of pushing the limits in the backcountry. It offers impressive precision and power. For those looking for a more accessible and budget-friendly sled, other RMK models may be more suitable. But for riders looking to maximize their mountain thrills, the Polaris 9R remains a solid bet.

I’d like to thank Polaris Snowmobile for the opportunity to test this sled this winter.
