For a few seasons now, I wanted to try the in-between to protect my hands. In other words, between “traditional” mittens and gloves. So, I had the chance to test the FXR Index mitt. First, I would describe their style as the hands of the “penguin” in Batman or as the Ninja Turtles… Haha. Seriously, the look is different and has advantages. For example, it keeps your fingers together to avoid the cold, but it also maintains dexterity without having taken your mitt off. It’s a good compromise, and I particularly liked it.
This mitt offers excellent comfort, good dexterity, and are made of high-quality materials. The outer leather is made of thick cow leather for a durable appearance and good flexibility, even in freezing weather. The palm and thumb are made of reinforced leather to give more resistance.
The mitt have 300 g of Thinsulate® insulation on the back of the hand (facing the wind) and 200 g on the palm and fingers to keep them warm. Inside, a polar lining makes the inside comfortable and provides more insulation.
A Hipora® membrane is used to ensure excellent waterproofing. It is impermeable and breathable and is very effective to evacuate moisture while keeping cold air outside.
Finally, the mitt has a beautiful design, and the materials provide optimal protection against the cold.
The FXR leather Index mitt is very warm and are ideal for long days on trails where maximum insulation is required. Even if it is -35? C, it is still very warm. Also, mitts provide excellent protection against the wind, and you never get the feeling that the wind “penetrates” the fabric.
However, on more active days, these mittens do not breathe enough if you sweat a lot. You will have a feeling of increased humidity inside, and especially the outside will become wet and heavy — everything you want to avoid when you go for a ride.
Here are some other features I liked about the FXR Leather Index mitt :
- Wrist adjustment with adjustable straps.
- Presence of a strap at the top of the wrist
- The grip on the snowmobile handlebar is excellent
Thanks to our partner, FXR, for making this test.
