Québec Snowmobile Season: What You Need to Know
Our focus is to make you comfortable and confident in your planning for the approaching Québec snowmobile season. We will outline many of the key elements of the Québec snowmobile experience that will assist you to experience the very best of Québec. The most important steps to plan a snowmobile trip in Québec should begin before you arrive.
Find Your Ideal Destination
The first step to preparing for a snowmobile getaway in Québec would be to choose where you want to go. The snowmobile guide will inspire you to start your planning and will help you discover all of the best snowmobile experiences available to you.
You can start by downloading the guide here.
In this guide, you will find a map of all the Québec Regions. You can compare and research the Trans-Québec trails and the regional trails, as well as accommodations and top points of interest in every region. There is also information that educates you on the “snow covering periods” for each destination. There are also multiple travel tips to ease your journey. Lastly, there are special winter events outside of the snowmobile trails that you may not want to miss.
Plan Ahead: Choose Your Own Adventure
Knowing where you are going on your trip is reassuring. Your preparation ahead of time allows you to relax and enjoy the best Québec has to offer. Decide if you prefer to ride every day from a single region and accommodation or ride to a new destination each evening.
The advantage of choosing a single base is familiarity. Every night, you will return to the same, familiar location. Consequently, you will have less to carry each day on the snowmobile trails. Also, you will have access to your tow vehicle and snowmobile trailer each evening. By day two, you will know the Québec trail number arriving and departing from your location and how close the fuel station is for your next day’s ride.
On the other hand, there is a certain challenge in preparing a trip that creates a larger loop. This type of trip, however, requires you to plan differently. First, there will be numerous trails and distances to calculate. Then, there will be multiple accommodations to reserve. Although, you will see more of Québec’s attractions, points of interest and, of course, legendary trails.
Alternatively, a multi-day loop will allow you to experience more regions in a single trip. Or you may use some of the circuits that many regions have developed for that purpose. Overall, the further you travel, the more likely you are to experience Québec’s diverse landscapes and scenery. The St. Lawrence River, mountains, the fjord, deep forests, mostly unseen wilderness, and large, sweeping agricultural lands are all before you, as they sleep for a few months.
Beyond the Trails: Enhance Your Snowmobile Trip in Québec
Each of Québec’s regions offers up their own features and special events for the winter. So, there are many ways to go about selecting your destination. Will you go to the region that is closest to your home, or go on an adventure far away? Will you go back to a familiar place, or explore new horizons?
There are also many attractions and events in every region. Don’t miss some of the most festive events so unique to Québec. Maybe it will be the Winter Carnival in the City of Québec or the Festival Folifrets Baie-James in Chibougamau.
The numerous points of interest are often unique to each region. From my experience, the choices in front of you are unlike any other snowmobile destination in the world.
I want to assure you that you will be welcomed everywhere. You will be made to feel special, like a pampered guest. Many locals, especially in the small villages and community relays, will be inquisitive and pleased that you have travelled so far to visit them. There are no bad decisions, regardless of what you choose. The Quebeckers will make you feel welcome and ensure your journey was worthwhile.
I organize snowmobile trips every year, and I always find it fun to choose where to ride in Québec. I have been fortunate enough to ride in almost all of Québec. Although, I have not covered the full 33,000 kilometres of trails…yet! There is so much to choose from! But that is what trip planning is all about: ensuring that you have a memorable experience that enhances what you love to do.
Essential Safety Tips and Resources to Prepare Your Trip Properly
Safety Tips and Regulations
The best way to keep snowmobiling fun and safe is to know what is required of you. Find the snowmobile safety tips, trail tips and regulations all in one place on the FCMQ’s website. Take the time to get to know them, because some laws might differ from where you’re from.
Trail Permit: Mandatory for Your Snowmobile Trip in Québec
You must have a trail permit to ride snowmobile trails in Québec, no matter how long your trip is. Get your own at any time through the FCMQ’s website. On top of granting you access to all of the province’s federated trails, it also comes with a certain level of protection.
Consult the FCMQ’s Interactive Map
Québec has thousands of kilometres of interconnected trails to explore. Use the FCMQ’s interactive map to explore trail conditions, complete with must-visit sightseeing spots and accommodations along the way.
Get Real-Time Updates and More With the iMotoneige App
Alternatively, the FCMQ has this mobile app called iMotoneige. It serves, among other things, as a real-time interactive map of the snowmobile trails in the province. You can easily get yours online now, so you’re ready to ride as soon as the trails open. This is essentially the very best access to trail maps, updates on trail conditions, accommodations, and more through one convenient app.
Québec Offers More to Experience
While the trails may have attracted you to plan your snowmobile trip in Québec, there is so much more to experience. Accommodations are always thinking about their snowmobile guests; many even cater to them in various special ways.
I recall, once, on a snowmobile trip in Québec, a very special treat awaited us at our reservation for the evening. Upon arriving at a small private hotel, we found the snow was left purposely in the parking lot next to the drive-up rooms. The hoteliers even provided us with our own corridor over the pavement. And there was another blanket of snow (left) in the parking lot for snowmobiles only. The plowed parking area for cars and other guests had been separated. This “welcome mat” was entirely prepared specifically for snowmobilers.
Then, remember that attractions vary in every region. Some have even been created especially for trail users. Indeed, Québec has more than its share of highlights. One of my favourite types of attractions is the purpose-built viewpoints. These are usually located along Trans-Québec trails or at the end of a groomed regional trail at higher elevations. My favourite is in Chaudière-Appalaches, on Mont Saint-Magloire. The views from this peak at 917 metres are memorable. Many viewpoints exist and are trail accessible in most regions in Québec.
Québec “Gets It,” Because They “Have It”
Québec not only embraces winter, it also celebrates it. You will feel it, you will see it, and you will experience it. Their rich culture will make you want to return, trust me.
If you’ve never had the opportunity to visit, ride, and experience the trails and snowmobile culture in Québec, trust our collective experience at SledMagazine.com. I invite you to read this article, in which I talk about a trip I made where we visited nine regions in one go.
