Top 3: Hybrid Snowmobiles for 2018

Top 3: Hybrid Snowmobiles for 2018

Everyone will agree that hybrid snowmobiles are experiencing the most important growth in the snowmobile market. These versatile vehicles have much to offer thanks to their capacity to switch between trail rides and off-trail days. For 2018, here are my top 3 hybrid snowmobiles.

Position 1: SKI-DOO RENEGADE BACKCOUNTRY X

First, I had to place the all-new RENEGADE BACKCOUNTRY X in the pole position due to the fact that it offers the most complete driving experience, no matter the environment. Its new REV 4th generation frame is truly geared toward the pilot’s needs, resulting in a very intuitive driving experience where a sense of complicity with the vehicle is quickly acquired.

Its 850 E-TEC engine develops phenomenal power in contrast to its light weight and is especially well balanced within its frame. Additionally, the 146 in x 1.6 in treads permit a 50-50 compromise between trail and off-trail riding.

Another major benefit of the BACKCOUNTRY X 850 E-TEC is its out of the ordinary maneuverability thanks to its cMotion rear suspension, which results in a true compromise between performance on and off trail.

With BACKCOUNTRY X we also have the chance to experience one of Ski-Doo’s newest features, the SHOT start-up system. This system stores energy, permitting the driver to rapidly start-up the engine after a full stop without the usual weight constraint seen with conventional start-up systems, saving 20 lbs in the process.

Position 2: POLARIS 800 SKS 146

In 2018, Polaris introduced the 800 SKS 146 to complete the offerings provided by the 155 in from last year. This hybrid snowmobile was developed for traveling in very deep snow and to provide the features necessary for confident trail riding. The best of both worlds!

This vehicle comes paired with the excellent AXYS frame. The rigid, lightweight, and balanced AXYS frame offers the pilot a driving experience so satisfying one could almost describe it as orgasmic. Let’s now leave aside the subjective and move on to this snowmobile’s more objective qualities.

The 800 SKS 146 is an exceptional machine thanks mainly to its 800cc engine Cleanfire 2, which provides ample power to face any situation. Next comes the highly competent semi-independent IGX rear suspension offering a well-dosed compromise between the flexibility required for off-trail riding and the rigidity needed on trails. Furthermore, the suspension is adjustable and well calibrated so as to literally swallow the snow.

Position 3: ARCTIC CAT XF 8000 HIGH COUNTRY LIMITED ES 141 in

To complete my top 3, I have chosen the Arctic Cat XF 8000 HIGH COUNTRY LIMITED ES 141 in for the numerous features that make it a good hybrid machine. The XF 8000 HIGH COUNTRY comes with the all new 800cc 2-stroke C-TEC2 engine. For 2018, the engine was reworked in order to deliver better torque at high and low rpm. In addition, it consumes up to 30% less oil.

This beast of a vehicle is equipped with FOX QS3 suspension, which in my humble opinion is truly the best since it offers both the rigidity and flexibility necessary, depending on the situation. What makes the suspension so great is its three-position quick and easy adjustments. I love it!

Another characteristic I love is this snowmobile’s 4 in height-adjustable handlebar, which can be configured in extended position for standing mountain driving, or within a fraction of a second, the bar can be lowered to permit intense trail riding.

The aggressive 141 in treads, and especially the 2.25 in paddles, provide all the traction needed to climb up on snow banks when driving off trail. However, without making it an unpleasant experience, the treads can be a bit too intense for trail riding. Despite this minor flaw, the ARCTIC CAT XF 8000 HIGH COUNTRY is an extremely competent machine pleasant to drive in a multitude of conditions.

Conclusion

Top 3: Hybrid Snowmobiles for 2018

This year again, snowmobile manufacturers chose to focus on a collection of hybrids that are seeing significant market success thanks to their versatility and adaptability to different snow conditions. The three machines listed here are excellent trail partners or equally perfect for an intense mountain getaway.

Now that you have read an overview of the different possibilities offered in this collection, all that is left to do is to decide which one catches your eye, and then spend hours of fun in the snow!
