The Carbon Fiber helmet by 509

For a long time, I had serious doubts about wearing a snowcross type of helmet when I was riding on trails. Would it keep me warm ? Would there be condensation in my goggles ?

Well, I have been convinced by 509 products ! During the last 2012-2013 snowmobile season, I got the great opportunity to test the Carbon Fiber helmet by 509 along with the Aviator goggles.

I often tested these products during drag racing, when the inside temperature changes constantly. I also had the chance to test the same combo on the mountains in Montana and in powder snow, and even where I mostly had doubts, on trails under -20 °C…

The Carbon Fiber helmet

What is so great about this helmet is its strength combined with an amazing lightness. The 2013 edition that I tested had weight of 1240 gr versus a regular helmet of 1520 gr. The 2014 edition, the C2 Carbon Fiber helmet, is even lighter with its 1180 gr. The carbon fiber is a very robust material often used in high-performance sports like Formula 1 where weight is a very significant factor. It is about 4,5 to 5 times lighter than steel for the same strenght!

In order to improve the inner ventilation, the helmet presents 5 intake ports at front : one at the center for your mouth, two on each side towards your cheeks and two others above the goggles.

There are also 5 ventilation ports : two at the rear bottom, two at the center and the last one on top of the helmet.

The inner part of the 509 helmet is fully removable and washable !

The Aviator goggles

It would be absolutely impossible not to talk about the look of the Aviator goggles. The name describes exactly its shape and great usefulness. Inspired by the goggles used by fighter pilots, the oversized spherical lens improves your peripheral vision. The lens has 7 vents while the frame has 10. It is easy to remove the lens that comes in various colors. The 2" wide strap has a triple silicon lining that always grips to the helmet perfectly.

The test

One of the most significant features is the helmet-goggles combo. The goggles and the helmet fit perfectly together (Photo : so that almost no air hits directly your face. Just add a balaclava and even under colder temperatures, you will not have any problem.

After all my tests, I can confirm that there was no fog in my goggles except sometimes when I was racing. Then it occurred when I had stopped after an intensive period, and I still had my goggles on; the heat was evaporating as it usually does. Sometimes, I experienced more moisture coming from perspiration due to the lack of action that was following. Afterwards, I got the small 509 fan  designed for this situation and I never had fog anymore.

I could keep my goggles on without any problem !
