There may not be a lot of snow on the ground, but snowmobile season is definitely here and the province is reminding those who enjoy the pastime to be safe.
“Weather, trail and ice conditions can change quickly, and riders should take the time to check the forecast and monitor conditions to ensure a safe experience,” Conservation Minister Dave Chomiak said in a release Friday.
Chomiak says the mild weather this season has prevented the ground and water from freezing on trails, especially in provincial parks.
About 12,000 kilometres of groomed trails are available throughout Manitoba, which the Snowmobilers of Manitoba (Snoman) helps to maintain.
“Due to the warm temperatures and high water levels in lakes, streams and swamps, we are asking people to be extremely careful as ice conditions can change dramatically,” said Snoman executive director Ken Lucko.
Riders using the groomed trail network within Whiteshell, Birds Hill, Grand Beach, Hecla and Spruce Woods provincial parks are required to purchase and posses a valid Snopass.
