A Cochrane-born snowmobiler has joined forces with some fellow riders to produce what they claim to be the first all-female video showcasing their sport.
Amy Flowers, who works in town and lives in Calgary, has been riding a snowmobile since the age of nine and has an extensive background competing in various snowmobiling disciplines. She believes the video, which is titled Sledbetties and expected to be released in the next few weeks, is a huge landmark for female participants in the extreme sport.
“It’s totally male dominated,” Flowers added.
“You go into the back-country and all the groups are men.
“Some of them have the attitude that we shouldn’t be out there . . . so it’s nice (to) have this video that’s all women to showcase what women riding is all about.”
Flowers anticipates the film’s length being roughly 45 minutes long and said each of the 20 riders featured brought a different skill set to the project.
Some riders preferred taking their vehicles off steep jumps and climbing up mountain chutes, while others focused on more off-beat disciplines such as drag racing on grass and skipping their sleds across water.
“Some of it ended in carnage and wrecks, but they still wanted to try it and give it a shot,” Flowers said with a chuckle.
“All the women involved are really good. They all got excited about it right away"
