Snowmobile race doubles as recruiting headquarters

Cascade County Search and Rescue sets up shop on the sidelines of the 2 day event. Commander William Burgus says the races are a "really good spot for us to come and look. It’s the kind of people we’re looking for to be part of our organization."

Burgus says they’ll train most anyone for Search and Rescue, but snowmobile racers tend to embody the spirit of the cause. He says a few prerequisites include a love for the outdoors, being physically fit, and not minding getting called in during the middle of the night.

Search and Rescue members are all volunteers. Burgus says that’s why a large base of members is needed to best serve Cascade County when an emergency arises.

The Montana Karting Association also attended the weekend races hoping to boost membership. John Virgin tells KRTV he wants to promote go-kart racing and eventually build a racing complex in Great Falls.

Virgin says, "I think snowmobile racers are really getting the idea that go-karting could be a lot of fun, and it’s an inexpensive sport compared to a lot of the other racing sports in America."

Smokin’ Grass Drags is sponsored by the Great Falls Snowmobile Association. Members say it’s one of very few grass races left in the region.
