Patriot 9R RMK Khaos 2025: Real-World Impact of the New Lightweight Components

At the dawn of the 2025-2026 season, it is time to review the 2025 Polaris Patriot 9R RMK Khaos 155 — a machine mainly noted for its weight reduction. Given the economic context seriously affecting the recreational vehicle world, many expected a major breakthrough that would shake up the industry with the announcement of the 2025 and even 2026 models. Instead, Polaris chose to focus on shedding weight to strengthen its position in the mountain segment. These updates notably included redesigned headlights integrated into the hood, a new seat, and lighter running boards, reducing overall weight by 6.5 lb.

Beyond appearances that may seem somewhat understated from a marketing perspective, this is still a step forward. The 2025 RMK Khaos Slash is clearly lighter, and this is felt directly at the handlebars. In this review, I aim to evaluate the specific evolutions made to the 2025 RMK models. For this reason, this article will not focus on the Patriot 9R engine or the excellent Matryx platform.

2025 Polaris RMK Running Boards: A Lighter Design

The wider openings in the running boards were noticeable during our tests. These changes were intended to help release snow accumulation that could add weight. While previous Polaris models were known to be among the least prone to this issue, the effectiveness of this new design was surprisingly strong.

However, we also found that these changes created some weakness in impact resistance. We did witness a few breakages in this area. Your call on this one.

Handling Impacts of the Lightened Hood

The redesigned hood, intended to reduce the machine’s overall weight, also stood out. When comparing the weight of a 2024 hood to a 2025 hood by hand, the improvement is obvious. This update also lowers the centre of gravity, giving the machine even more manoeuvrability. It’s also an advantage when rolling the sled over during a stuck situation, as there is less weight up front.

A brand-new low-profile Pro-Lite seat, one pound lighter, is featured in the 2025 RMK lineup. Although subtle, the redesign improves control, agility during weight transfers, and rider confidence during steep climbs and descents.

BPR8ES Spark Plugs: A Notable Upgrade for 2025

To resolve repeated spark plug failures on certain models, Polaris announced an update for 2025, moving from BPR9ES to BPR8ES plugs. As a hotter-rated plug, they performed flawlessly. After over 1,900 km, I didn’t have to replace a single one. It also appears that this issue, previously more noticeable on the 2025 850 Patriot Boost engines, may be resolved. A story to keep an eye on.

For 2025, Polaris mountain sleds received an update to the throttle lever and the cable connecting the carburetor butterflies to the throttle. Previously, the lever and cable tended to freeze and stick. The new setup successfully eliminates this issue. The system felt efficient and consistent. However, I did break the new cable at the tip. While this may seem like a minor failure, the sled becomes completely unusable without it, and replacing it requires a good amount of patience.

QuickDrive Transmission Versus Ice

It is well known that RMK models require some considerations during cold starts. These Polaris mountain sleds are equipped with an open QuickDrive transmission. It is more responsive and reliable compared to a chain case, but the drawback shows up mainly during cold starts after a deep-snow day. The open design tends to fill with snow, which then turns to ice from engine heat. It’s important to remove all snow after a ride. Failing to do so increases the risk of wearing or reduces the lifespan of the belt.

2025 Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Reliability: Key Takeaways

True to her reputation, the 2025 Polaris Patriot 9R RMK Khaos Slash remains a benchmark for demanding mountain riders. Combining power, reliability, thoughtful design, and agility in challenging terrain, she delivers. The 2025 improvements targeting weight reduction and improved ergonomics strengthened her status as a leader in the mountain segment. For those seeking an uncompromised mountain riding experience, this sled stands among the top options.

For 2026, I am pleased to continue my long-term test of this 2025 model. After logging more than 1,900 km last season, I am excited to evaluate her over an even longer period. I am especially looking forward to validating the reliability of various mechanical components. I will also be present out West and in the Monts Groulx to share articles about these iconic snowmobile destinations. Follow along to discover my upcoming reports from these iconic locations.
