TogglePolaris Indy XC 850, Our year in review
From crisp and fresh daybreak to the magical paradise of moon lit nights and all of the adventures and locations between, our 2019 Indy XC offered one very sweet and satisfying riding experience.
Power, performance, the look and function of conventional styling and the 129” Pro CC coupled rear suspension successfully completed the Indy’s total return to the top of the heap in trail performance and control.
In our 2019 long term trial introduction article, a primary objective was to experience how well matched the new Pro CC rear skid would be to the proven AXYS front end. After nearly 3,000 mi / 4,800 kms, we consider this question to be asked and answered. This IS one complete package of front to back snowmobile suspension performance.
Polaris’ 1st year 850 Patriot showed both how potent this power plant is and is yet to be, all season long.
If you are thinking about your next snowmobile, the Indy XC package should not to be overlooked. This is a sled with characteristics that will make it a winner to a majority of riders.
The Storm 150 track was new for 2019. On hard packed, soft and deep snow the multi pitch height design offered consistently impressive braking and acceleration traction.
After thousands of miles/kilometers, it is our opinion that the gentle yet noticeable corner apex and exit assistance offered by this unique design, will increase its use and preference for years to come. And with our moderate safety studding by Mack Studs, the Storm 150 loved ice too!
The Indy’s riding position put us just where we want to be for comfortable and interactive control. The Indy seat is not too close, not too far, not too hard and not too soft; in the words of Goldilocks “it’s just right!”
2019 XC Hit list
- Dependability
- Durability
- Ride quality
- Fun factor
- Fit and finish
- Ease of spring and shock adjustability
- Conventional tunnel’s ability to accept a much wider range of travel accessories and attachment options.
A particular accessory hit for 2019 was my use of Polaris’ new for 2019 USB phone charging handle bar bag.
I take my SledMagazine.com photos like most snowmobilers, with my phone. Just like you, my photos are not professional , they are only occasional and on the fly. As a result my phone needs to be always ready. The USB bag kept my phone charged and warm enough to perform whenever. I miss a lot of fantastic photos because I’m a rider first and foremost, but I never missed a shot because my phone wasn’t ready. Check it out.
Our XC HICUPS
Yes, we always find a few
Our Hi/Lo beam indicator light stopped working before our season was finished
A few of our Walker Evans shock adjustment knobs loosened and fell off. Our supporting dealer Laquerres Marine and Sports Center reported that we were not alone in this minor inconvenience.
We experienced fuel and oil consumption that was not as good as we hoped for, as well as a slight hesitation that appeared between 6,000-6,200 RPM. In our 1,000+ clicks article we also highlighted the prolonged warm up period. We attributed each of these conditions to conservative first year calibrations of the new Patriot. On a 1st year engine with an included 4 year warranty this was really no huge surprise. Mid season ECU re-flashes were reported to improve each of these items. We look forward to further refined 2020 Patriot calibrations to be enjoyed by all.
In tight twisty trails, arm stretching straights, sweeping high speed curves, boon docking boogie, fresh or firm snow on groomed and ungroomed trails wide or narrow, this sled was a keeper. From diamond like glistening of ice covered branches, to snow blanketed evergreens, blue bird skies, clear stars in the black of night and mystical sensations of a white out storm, I lived an XC dream in 2019.
THE POLARIS BONUS
Yes, you can take advantage of Polaris‘ Snow Check Select program to get a limited edition model, Patriot 850 engine choice and customized selections, but Polaris also makes a commitment to in season availability of a full line of great sleds. Polaris dealers can make the new sled dreams of in season buyers come true all winter long.
If it seems like I’ve been gushing over this sled, it’s because I am. I can’t help it; the 2019 Indy XC was that good in my opinion and that much fun on every trail I travelled.
Based on our 2019 experience, we can’t wait to introduce you to what Polaris models and engines we will be evaluating for 2020. The days are getting shorter each day and it won’t be long now.
Here is a little hint. One of our 2020 Polaris’ will be more and less all at the same time.
May the sounds and sensations of RPM’s on your thumb be in your mind and soul each and every day.
