OPP want snowmobilers to use caution and stay safe

The Temiskaming OPP were on patrol with the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Lake Temagami area when they located a stranded snowmobiler whose snowmobile had gone through the ice.

The OPP and MNR conduct joint patrols to assure safety on the tails,  waterways, enforce the Liquor Licence Act and the Fish and Wild Life Conservation Act.

Some of the things the OPP advise to do to keep safe include, checking the weather before you head out, obey speed limits and road and trails signs, and avoid driving on ice, but if you must check ice conditions before going on it.  Because many snowmobile fatalities involve breaking through the ice the OPP recommend if you are riding on ice you should wear a buoyant snowmobile suit, carry ice picks and make sure they are accessible.

Another safety precaution is to inform someone where you are going, your exact route and when you expect to return. You should never travel alone and always be prepared for the unexpected.

The OPP remind people to use caution at rail and road crossing, always ride on the right side of the trail and when travelling at night avoid travelling faster than the beam of light your headlight can shine ahead.

Finally the OPP advise people to drive their sleds within their own ability.
