Section 5 of the Manitowoc County snowmobile trail system, in the southwest portion of the county, opened Wednesday, according to Adam Backus of the Manitowoc County Parks.
Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 of the 248.35-mile public trail will remain closed due to open water or insufficient snow, he said.
Those portions of the trail on plowed fields that have not been smoothed are only marginally satisfactory for travel, Backus said.

Snowmobilers are requested to stay on marked trails unless permission to do otherwise has been granted. Those who do not stay on the trails are trespassing and may face a possible fine of $250.
