Maine volunteers collect 46 tons of trash

aine conservation officials say volunteers have collected 46 tons of trash from private properties as a gesture of thanks toward the landowners.

All-terrain vehicle and snowmobile clubs, land trusts, community groups including Boy Scouts, and local municipalities hauled away the trash and discarded material on Landowner Appreciation Day Sept. 25. The items included 1,418 tires.

Landowner relations coordinator Dan Scott of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the effort’s a way to say thank you to Maine landowners. Scott says more than 90 percent of Maine is privately owned, and those who enjoy the outdoors rely on the generosity of landowners to keep their properties open for public access.
