Look what’s new for snowmobilers in our region (map)

A brand new, 120 km-long area trail only adds to the sense of anticipation as snowmobilers prepare for the upcoming season.

“This gives us a tie with Elliot Lake,” Garnet Greenwood, president of the Sault Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, told SooToday.com this morning.

“We’ll be able to leave Sault Ste. Marie and go to Aubrey Falls. From Aubrey Falls, you can go to Elliot Lake.”

Greenwood said winter weather over the last while drove the need for the route.

“Snow conditions east of the city in the Echo Bay area have been minimal in recent years. That precipitated the idea of moving north where we get snow in early December."

Much work was involved in turning the idea into a trail ready for use once the white stuff arrives.

“Negotiations with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Clergue Forest Management Inc. and the North Shore EACOM took up a great deal of time,” Greenwood noted.?

But those efforts eventually paid off.

“The last piece was to get the executive of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs to give their permission to have it designated as a prescribed trail.”
