The 2011 Cain’s Quest Snowmobile Endurance Race is proving to be the most challenging to date. It is day 6 of the race and teams began arriving in Churchill Falls as of 11:38pm last night. They have endured a lot of obstacles along the way between weather conditions, freezing temperatures, deep snow, rough terrain and mechanical breakdowns it has been a gruelling 6 days out there along the Cain’s Quest race route.
So far, 13 teams have scratched all due to mechanical problems. These teams include: Team 1 (Milley/Clements) from Labrador City, Team 3 (Heald/Farley) from Maine USA, Team 5 (Rogers/Callahan) from Happy Valley Goose Bay and Labrador City respectively, Team 7 (Hastings/Price) from Wyevale, Ontario, Team 12 (Griffin/Coppersmith) from Maine, USA, Team 16 (Wilmott/Woodworth) from Labrador City, NL, Team 17 (May/Kooktook) from Kuujjuaq, QC, Team 19 (Brunet/Fournelle) from Mont Laurier, QC, Team 24 (Gillam/Power) from Labrador City, NL, Team 25 (AuCoin/Girard) from Nova Scotia and Quebec, Team 28 (Hallstrom/Dolby) from Minnesota, USA, Team 32 (Benuen/Rich) from Sheshatshiu, NL and Team 47 (Dandurand/Warren) from Guadeloupe, France and Lac St. Aimes, QC.
There are 13 teams left in the race. Currently the front runners are Team 22(Gardner/Knipping) from Maine USA and Team 06 (Travers/Travers) from Labrador City, NL
Organizers anticipate a finish for some time late this afternoon. Team 22 will be the first out of Churchill at an unofficial time of 11:38am followed by Team 06 (Travers/Travers) signing out at 11:57am. Still, anything can happen and a surprise finish is certainly not unheard of in the history of Cain’s Quest. It’s not over, until it’s over!
