A federal grant for infrastructure projects targets job creation in Québec

The Québec Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (FCMQ) calls for the clubs to submit their infrastructure projects ready to be rolled out and completed by March 31, 2010.

These works are made possible thanks to the support of the National Trails Coalition (NTC), which has received a federal grant for the current financial year.

  • Job creation is the overriding objective of this program established by the federal government.
  • The projects must demonstrate the economic advantages linked to the development or enhancement of the recreational trails, bridges and water crossings in Québec, with a view to stimulating the recreational and tourism sectors.
  • In the framework of the program, priority will be given to works concerning regional interconnection, so that the snowmobile trail network, known worldwide, may continue to cover the whole of the province.

The grant program applies solely to financial year 2009-2010. Eligible projects must touch on the construction, enhancement, renovation or rehabilitation of the recreational trails, or the construction, enhancement and rehabilitation of bridges and water crossings. The projects must be ready to be carried out and successfully completed before the end of March 2010. The projects presented must therefore have already met the requirements defined by law in the areas of environmental protection and analysis.

The NTC has received from the Government of Canada a total investment of $25 million for the whole of the country, as set out in Budget 2009: Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The federal dollars must be matched with minimum financial contributions of 50% in investments from other partners. These contributions may stem from funding provided by other levels of government, including provincial, territorial and municipal governments. Fondations, corporations and private donors are other potential sources of financial contributions.

The NTC is a not-for-profit organization. Its members are: the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) of which the FCMQ is a member, the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV), and the Canadian Trails Federation.

About FCMQ: The Québec Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (FCMQ) strives to further the development and promotion of the practice of snowmobiling. The Federation’s affiliated clubs manage the sale of trail permits for Québec’s 33,000-kilometer trail network, and see to its development, planning, maintenance, signposting, and safety.
