2013 Yamaha Apex X-TX : The industry easiest snowmobile to pilot

We went with pleasure to RPM Rive-Sud, a Yamaha dealership where we received a warm welcome from Mr André Lessard and Jean-François Ferland. They described to us the features of the Yamaha snowmobiles we were going to test. Here are the comments gathered by the test pilots who rode over a hundred kilometers on groomed trails, in respect of the snowmobiling regulations such as speed limits.

The following elements have been evaluated :
  • riding, ergonomics
  • aesthetics, finish quality
  • engine, noise, fume
  • track
Modifications

There has been no modification made on this 2013 Yamaha Apex X-TX.

Riding

The manufacturer classifies this snowmobile in the «Cross Country» category. It differs from the «Trail» Apex and the Apex SE by its 144 in. track instead of 121 in. As soon as we get seated, we recognize the lower riding position compared with the other manufacturers. Some like it for its lower centre of gravity that provides a full control sport riding.

The seat is nicely padded. The 144 in. track of the 2013 Apex X-TX does not interfere with its handling.  We can compare it because we also ride a 2011 Apex with a 121 in. track. All pilots are unanimous about the Electric Power Steering (EPS).  It decreases the steering effort while keeping a linear stability on trail even if you take one hand off the handlebar to signal other snowmobilers.

The 2013 Apex X-TX was not equipped with Snow Tracker, the skis correctors, and despite that, there was no darting. We enjoyed full protection against wind, lower body, upper body, head, thanks to the cabin and windshield configuration. Muffs on the handles are less needed, but at -25 °C, they are appreciated. We believe that the controls on the handles at Yamaha’s are the industry benchmark. The location and size of the buttons are just perfect. We liked the warmers controls with gradation that are so easy to use.

The odometer digital indicator is of a good size and easy to read at a glance. The handles fit the riding position. One of the pilots said that this snowmobile was perfect for his daughter who likes snowmobiling, but deprives herself of it because piloting is too hard for her physical capacities. «She must try the 2013 Apex X-TX», did he say.

Aesthetics

The look of the Apex X-TX is still in, even if it has not changed much since it was introduced in 2009. The finish of this Japanese manufacturer is impeccable. Yamaha dealers offer numerous graphic packages if you wish to customize your sled. There are some surfaces available on the hood of the Apex X-TX where you can apply your favorite decals.

Engine

This 4-stroke 3-cylinder engine of 998 cc is famous for its reliability and produces a unique muffled sound right away. The recent addition of the electronic fuel injection provides a linear power at all speeds. The track produced low noise at any speed despite the trail covered with snow hardened by wind and extreme cold.

Conclusion

This 2013 Yamaha Apex X-TX is a snowmobile designed for riders who enjoy trail snowmobiling, and sometimes off-trail adventure.  Its main quality is to be so easy to pilot. This is why we call it «The industry easiest snowmobile to pilot»
