CKX Elevation Zero One-Piece Suit: Performance at an Affordable Price!

This winter, I had the opportunity to put the CKX Elevation Zero one-piece suit to the test. For several winters, I’ve been riding the Chic-Choc Mountains on backcountry snowmobiles. This mountain range offers the perfect playground with its diverse weather systems, generous elevation changes, and lush, varied vegetation. It’s the ideal environment to push a garment to its limits—trust me! I must say, my trial left me pleasantly surprised. The Elevation Zero monosuit is highly efficient! Let me show you why this suit offers one of the best value-for-money options on the market.

What Is the CKX Elevation Zero One-Piece Suit?

This is a one-piece garment manufactured by the Canadian company CKX. The Elevation Zero one-piece suit is designed primarily for snowmobiling. That said, it’s also comfortable for simply playing in the snow! The “Zero” designation means the suit is not insulated—it’s a shell. This suit is also available in an insulated version and comes in a variety of colours. A version for women is also available.

Hiltex 20K/15K Membrane

The outer layer of the Elevation Zero suit features a Hiltex membrane that breathes well and resists water. CKX specifies the following for this membrane:

  • Wind resistance (membrane): 20,000 mm
  • Water resistance (membrane): 20,000 mm
  • Breathability (membrane): 15,000 g/m² per day

Specs Are Great, But Does It Perform?

I was pleasantly surprised by how well this suit wicks moisture. After about 15 rides, here’s my takeaway: I always stay dry or dry off quickly. I layer with merino wool base layers and a lightweight merino-insulated down jacket. If the Elevation Zero shell didn’t wick away moisture effectively, I’d quickly end up soaked and freezing. Remarkably, I felt comfortable throughout the day.

The suit also excels in water and wind resistance. External elements don’t have much impact on comfort. When it gets extremely cold, you’ll need to adjust the layers underneath, but otherwise, the suit does its job effectively.

An honourable mention goes to the membrane: it ensures the suit remains flexible and well fitted under all conditions.

“It’s Built Tough”

With Cordura reinforcements on the knees and inner legs, this suit offers optimal protection where it matters most. These areas are often at risk in backcountry snowmobiling, and added durability helps reduce the chances of tears from branches during maneuvers like side-hilling.

The removable knee pads also add comfort, especially during contact with snowmobile plastics. While they don’t replace additional protective gear, they certainly improve comfort.

Features Worth Highlighting

The CKX Elevation Zero one-piece suit comes with several thoughtful features that make it stand out.

The Best Suspenders for Backcountry Snowmobiling

Let’s start with the suspenders. Yes, suspenders. These are by far the best I’ve worn in my snowmobiling career. They’re comfortable, provide excellent support, and keep the suit perfectly in place. The wide Y-shaped back design adds extra stability and comfort.

Soft Linings for Maximum Comfort

The inner linings deserve a mention too. The suit features mesh at the back for breathability and soft linings at the collar, shoulders, knees, and hips for added comfort.

Oversized Lens Cloth for Clear Vision

The chest pocket includes the largest lens cloth I’ve ever seen. Its generous size allows for thorough cleaning and protection of your goggles. Methodical users can use different corners for each wipe, reducing the risk of scratches.

Removable Hood for Versatility

The suit features a removable hood for added protection during breaks. It’s a practical option for those who want extra shielding from the elements during extended mountain stays.

Adjustable Comfort With Multiple Vents

The Elevation Zero monosuit doesn’t skimp on ventilation. Six mesh-backed vents allow you to adjust airflow to stay comfortable, no matter the conditions.

Ample Storage Space

The suit offers excellent storage options. The large chest pocket, as big as the lens cloth it holds, is deep and secure. Additional pockets include a small one on the left arm (perfect for tissues), thigh pockets, and an inner chest pocket. You won’t run out of storage space with this suit.

A Room for Improvement

While the CKX Elevation Zero is almost perfect, its boot fastening system could use an upgrade. The current straps tend to come loose in deep or moderately deep snow, causing the boot gaiter to fold back. Snow inevitably seeps in, leading to wet and cold feet. To fix this, I wrapped duct tape around my ankles, which solved the issue. However, a better fastening system would eliminate the need for such workarounds.

CKX Elevation Gloves

My test also included the CKX Elevation gloves, which share the same excellent value-for-money as the suit. These short gloves strike a perfect balance between warmth for trails and comfort for active riding. The inner grippy membrane ensures a secure hold on the handlebars.

The gloves provide great control and precision, and one glove even features a snow scraper for your lenses—a handy addition that helps prevent fogging and frost buildup.

Final Thoughts

The CKX Elevation Zero one-piece suit is a comfortable, high-performing, and affordable option. At the time of writing, it’s priced at $CAD 669.99 ($USD 519.99). It’s an excellent value for the price. I enjoyed it all winter. While not flawless, it comes very close. With its outstanding construction and reliable comfort, I have no hesitation recommending this suit.

Overall, the CKX Elevation Zero holds its own against competitors. Replacing the boot fastening system with snap buttons would eliminate snow infiltration issues for good. Nonetheless, I greatly appreciate this suit, which provides breathability and waterproofing, allowing me to enjoy my favourite sport worry free.

Big thanks to CKX for the opportunity to test it, and here’s to a great snow season!
