An Elite Machine Built for Today’s Trails
Some snowmobiles enter the market with the simple ambition of being good. Others are built to dominate. The 2026 Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 900 ACE Turbo R clearly belongs in the second category. Designed for riders who love pushing the pace on the trails, it stands among the sportiest and most technologically advanced machines in Ski-Doo’s lineup.
I received this snowmobile in mid-February, a point in the season when trail conditions can vary dramatically. Although my relatively short testing period didn’t allow me to rack up thousands of miles, it gave me enough time to evaluate the machine’s key strengths and get a solid understanding of what makes this X-RS version tick.
In this review, I’m sharing my personal impressions based on a limited testing period, but one that included conditions familiar to most snowmobilers: fast trails, icy sections, rough terrain, and long days in the saddle.

See the 2026 Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 900 ACE Turbo R in action and discover my firsthand impressions from the trails.
One thing quickly becomes clear: the Renegade X-RS Turbo R is all about serious trail performance. It isn’t trying to please everyone. It’s designed for riders who enjoy feeling the machine respond beneath them and demand exceptional precision through every corner.
RAS RX: A Front Suspension Built for Aggressive Riding
The first thing that caught my attention was undoubtedly the RAS RX front suspension. Inspired by racing, this suspension geometry promises improved steering precision and greater stability during aggressive trail riding.
The RAS RX is one of the major updates to the Renegade X-RS for 2026. First introduced on select MXZ models in 2025, the system is now making its way into more of Ski-Doo’s lineup.
According to the manufacturer, its geometry reduces body roll by 20%, improving handling and cornering performance.
Out on the trails, I quickly discovered that the system delivers on its promises. The RAS RX provides exceptionally precise steering, inspiring confidence as speeds increase.
Frankly, it was about time Ski-Doo addressed this shortcoming from previous generations. Through fast corners, the snowmobile holds its line remarkably well, delivering a reassuring sense of control.
Where this suspension truly shines is through successive tight corners. Transitions from one side to the other feel natural, and the machine always seems ready to respond to the rider’s intentions.
On rougher sections, the rigidity of the REV Gen5 chassis and the effectiveness of the suspension geometry help maintain excellent stability. The sled remains composed and absorbs trail imperfections with confidence.
There’s no doubt about it: this front suspension reinforces the X-RS’s sporting DNA!

Pilot X Skis: Excellent Bite and Precision
Complementing the front suspension, the Renegade X-RS features Pilot X skis, which play a crucial role in the snowmobile’s overall handling.
This raises an interesting question: why didn’t Ski-Doo equip the Renegade with Pilot RX skis, as found on the MXZ X-RS?
The Renegade has a slightly different mission. With its 137-inch track, it appeals to riders who want to cover considerable distances while still enjoying sporty performance.
In my experience, the Pilot X skis offer an appealing compromise between steering precision and steering effort, while the Pilot RX skis are more focused on aggressive riding.
From the very first miles, I noticed their excellent bite on hard-packed snow. Through fast corners, the skis seem to grip the trail surface, allowing the snowmobile to maintain a remarkably precise line.
This is particularly noticeable on icy or extremely hard-packed sections, where some snowmobiles tend to push wide through corners. Here, steering remains predictable and stable, although I did notice a slight tendency to wander occasionally.
The Pilot X skis also contribute to stability at higher speeds. When the trail opens up and the pace increases, the snowmobile remains firmly planted.
However, this impressive grip comes with a trade-off: it also contributes to the relatively heavy steering feel I experienced during my test.

Smart-Shox: Suspension That Adapts to the Terrain
Another major feature of the Renegade X-RS Turbo R I tested was the Ski-Doo Smart-Shox semi-active suspension system, available as an option on this model.
Although Smart-Shox isn’t new for 2026, the technology significantly improves the riding experience across a wide range of trail conditions.
The system uses electronically controlled KYB shocks, sensors, and an electronic control module to continuously adjust damping based on trail conditions and the snowmobile’s movements.
The Three Smart-Shox Suspension Modes
1. Comfort Mode
Comfort mode prioritizes a softer ride and improved absorption of smaller trail imperfections. It reduces the bumps and vibrations transmitted to the rider, making longer rides more relaxing.
This setting is particularly enjoyable on relatively smooth trails. However, when encountering larger bumps, the softer damping can increase the likelihood of bottoming out.
2. Sport Mode
Sport mode delivers an excellent balance between comfort, control, and performance.
Damping becomes firmer, providing better chassis support through corners while maintaining good bump absorption.
It’s particularly well suited for spirited riding over varying trail conditions.
3. Sport+ Mode
Sport+ mode emphasizes firmer damping and increased control through especially rough sections.
It helps manage suspension movement during major impacts and allows riders to make better use of the snowmobile’s sporting capabilities.
This setting is primarily intended for riders who prefer an aggressive pace and more direct responses from their machine.

Subtle Technology That Makes a Real Difference
Out on the trails, the benefits of Smart-Shox are immediately noticeable. When conditions become rougher or more technical, the suspension seems to react almost instantly, improving control and limiting unwanted chassis movement.
On fast sections, the snowmobile remains stable and composed. The system works quietly in the background without making its intervention feel artificial.
What I particularly appreciate is how unobtrusive the technology feels. Rather than completely changing the machine’s personality, it simply optimizes its behavior.
For riders who enjoy pushing hard, as I do, this technology represents a significant added value.
A Comfortable Heated Seat for Long Rides
Although the X-RS is clearly a performance-oriented snowmobile, Ski-Doo hasn’t overlooked rider comfort.
The 2026 Renegade X-RS comes standard with a heated trail seat, a particularly welcome feature when temperatures drop.
Its ergonomic design allows riders to move easily forward and backward, something especially useful during more aggressive riding.
The seat’s firmness strikes a good balance. It’s supportive enough for spirited riding yet comfortable enough to spend long hours on the trails without excessive fatigue.
It may not be the most spectacular feature on the snowmobile, but it certainly contributes to the overall riding experience.
In my opinion, Ski-Doo makes some of the most comfortable snowmobile seats in the industry!
The 10.25-Inch Touchscreen: Impressive Technology
The 2026 Renegade X-RS I tested was equipped with Ski-Doo’s 10.25-inch color touchscreen display, which adds another level of sophistication to the riding experience.
The display includes BRP Connect, built-in GPS navigation, and the Group Ride feature, which offers group-tracking functionality for riders using compatible systems.
For 2026, Ski-Doo also offers a 7.2-inch digital display, depending on the configuration.
Visually, the 10.25-inch screen is crisp, modern, and easy to read, even under challenging lighting conditions.
The interface provides convenient access to essential riding information, including speed, engine RPM, vehicle data, navigation, and connectivity features.
During my test, I particularly appreciated how smoothly the system operated. Menus responded quickly, and the entire interface felt polished and refined.
As technology becomes increasingly important in the snowmobile industry, this display certainly helps bring the riding experience into the modern era.

Outstanding Riding Enjoyment… Despite Demanding Steering
When it comes to performance, the Renegade X-RS Turbo R delivers an incredibly engaging riding experience.
Its 180-horsepower Rotax 900 ACE Turbo R engine, a 899 cc turbocharged three-cylinder four-stroke, delivers impressive acceleration and an excellent reserve of power.
Throttle response is sharp, and the snowmobile constantly feels as though it has more power waiting to be unleashed.
On fast trail sections, the stability of the REV Gen5 chassis inspires confidence and allows riders to maintain a brisk pace with assurance.
However, as the miles added up, I noticed that steering required a fair amount of physical effort. It’s precise, certainly, but also relatively heavy.
For experienced riders who enjoy aggressive riding, that may be part of the machine’s appeal. But over long days, this characteristic can become somewhat tiring.
It’s likely one of the compromises associated with this snowmobile’s performance-oriented setup.

One Area for Improvement: Steering Effort
No snowmobile is perfect, and the Renegade X-RS Turbo R is no exception.
If I had to identify one area that could benefit from improvement, it would be the amount of effort required at the handlebars.
In certain situations, particularly at lower speeds or during more technical maneuvers, the steering’s heaviness becomes noticeable.
In my opinion, adding electronic power steering in a future generation could be an interesting evolution. Such technology could potentially reduce the physical effort required from the rider without necessarily compromising steering precision.
This isn’t a major flaw, but rather an opportunity for further refinement in future models.
Final Verdict: A Snowmobile Built for Performance Enthusiasts
After this relatively short testing period, one conclusion stands out: the 2026 Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 900 ACE Turbo R fully embraces its sporting character.
With its new RAS RX front suspension, Pilot X skis, rMotion X rear suspension, and optional Smart-Shox technology, this machine has what it takes to deliver outstanding trail performance.
Add its 180-horsepower Rotax engine, heated seat, and advanced onboard technology, and you have a particularly compelling package for snowmobile enthusiasts.
This machine is clearly intended for riders who love pushing the pace and want a snowmobile capable of keeping up with their ambitions.
Despite its somewhat demanding steering, the overall riding experience remains remarkable, and the machine’s build quality reinforces Ski-Doo’s expertise in the high-performance trail segment.
Even with a relatively short test period, this snowmobile left a lasting impression: a machine built to attack the trails with confidence, precision, and style!
