2023 Polaris Timbersled: What’s new!

Everyone has their own way of enjoying the snowy conditions that are directly related to our winter seasons. For several years, off-road motorcycle enthusiasts have been able to practice their activity 12 months a year with modifications to their bikes. The term “Snowbike” is most often used to describe a motorcycle that has been transformed into a machine for tackling powder and snowy surfaces that are practically inaccessible by any other means of transportation.

For the uninitiated, in simple terms, we can summarize the Snowbike as the transformation of a motorcycle with parts that will replace the wheels.  The bolt-on design does not require any modifications other than removing a few parts and adding new components.

The designer of the first TimberSled was Allen Magnum and it was not until 2009 that the first prototype was actually built. His first tests were so successful that he was able to reach mountainous areas that he had never reached before on a snowmobile. In 2015, seeing the potential, Polaris Industries Inc. bought TimberSled.

Great news for 2023!

Why sit on our laurels when we can improve on some of the best. That’s the challenge the designers set themselves. We know that weight is enemy number 1 for all types of vehicles, because it limits their handling.

The new lighter ARO Gen 2 package

A new generation of the ARO package is born.

Described as “ARO Gen 2″, this kit has undergone a slimming treatment by drastically reducing its weight by 12 lbs. At first glance, it looks like the RIOT kit, as they share the same bumper, the same snow guard and the same mass centralization.

However, for 2023, its weight reduction of 12 lbs corresponds to 10% of its mass. We must admit that this is very significant.

To achieve this, they reduced the weight of several components by incorporating a new bumper and new side panels. However, they are very proud to have reduced the rotating mass by 2 lbs. The new Gen 2 (3″) track adds durability with its new 3” design while lightening it at the same time.

The perforated tracks also contributed to the weight reduction, while maintaining its rigidity. The geometry is the same as before for precise off-trail control.

The QuickDrive system, a new feature for Timbersled in 2023

The QuickDrive on a Timbersled

For context, you’ll recall that the QuickDrive replaced the more traditional chain guard and was in 2013, a way for Polaris to lighten the Pro RMK for the mountains. Officially called the QuickDrive Low Inertia Drive system, it was the first belt drive system in an OEM production snowmobile.

So why not use this proven belt system in Timbersled packages? The QuickDrive system is built to last with its heavy-duty steel gears.

One of the major advantages of the QuickDrive belt system is the drastically reduced maintenance frequency. Regular users will tell you that with the conventional system, they must regularly remove the guard to lubricate the housing and the chain. The QuickDrive also keeps the whole assembly free of grease.

It is available in Snowcheck in the ARO and RIOT models in the PRO version. It will also be possible to replace the conventional chain guard with a QuickDrive available as a replacement accessory.

A quick look at the ARO and RIOT platforms.

Two major versions are available for the enthusiasts and they are distinct for the different types of riders.

ARO platform

The popular ARO platform, with the Gen 2 upgrade, is designed around the rider. It tackles off-road environments with unmatched precision and maneuverability for epic rides.

RIOT Platform

For its part, the RIOT was born to lift the front end of the bike with ease and climb steep hills. Its dynamic agility and response create a thrill in the meadow, on the trail or on the mountain.

Ease of purchase.

To make it easier for buyers to choose a package that will suit their experience and budget, they have created separate variations. These are designated SPORT, PREMIUM and PRO.

The different packages available for 2023

SPORT.

To practice the activity of snowbike without breaking the bank, the SPORT set is the one to choose. It is also the set that is likely to interest new enthusiasts who are neophytes in this field. It’s a great way to get started without spending a lot of money.

The TimberSled SPORT trim level is the basic package that will allow drivers to have fun at a great price, using rebuildable Timberself IFP shocks. It’s available on the ARO 129, RIOT 120 and Ripper models.

PREMIUM.

The mid-range PREMIUM trim level will be available this season and is featured on the ARO 3, ARO 137, RIOT 120 and RIOT 3. It will use FOX QS3 adjustable quick-click shocks for quick and easy compression adjustment. These popular shocks allow for quick adjustment by selecting a three position switch: soft, medium and firm. This is probably the most popular set because it strikes the right balance between performance and handling.

PRO.

The top of the line level offered by TimberSled is without a doubt the PRO level offered only during the spring Snowcheck period. This is the most expensive package, but the one that offers everything a seasoned rider wants.

What you get with the PRO version is a high-performance FOX IBP QS3 shock with internal bypass and lightweight springs. As a result, Walker Evans Velocity shocks have consequently given way for 2022.  The PRO trim includes lightweight components that reduce transmission weight by 2 pounds. In total, the PRO trim level reduces the respectable 5-pound weight of the PREMIUM trim package.

The ARO 3, RIOT 3 and 120 SX are available for this top-of-the-line version.

In conclusion, converting a dirt bike to a TimberSled system is easy. It is universal and can be installed on any recognized motorcycle brand. The addition requires only a model-specific installation kit to complete the conversion. What a great way to enjoy our winters, isn’t it?
